The Korean society is now entering a new era of seeking various development plans by cultivating new values that are different from previous ones such as life satisfaction and sustainability. The population in the cities has greatly increased, and the landscape of the cities has gradually changed over time. However, after the period of high growth rate, the issue regarding the quality of life remains as a new challenge. In particular, care for the socially underprivileged, especially children, that needs careful attention in this rapidly changing urban life has been neglected. The cities are gradually developing and expanding in size as they grown in quantitative aspects at the same time. But, the space for children in the cities is scarce. The increasing risk factors of outdoor space, the absence of play spaces for children, and the worsening condition of air pollution require an environmental awareness within the cities to help the children grow properly. Children have not been the object of social attention until now. Recently, however, attention toward children and the socially underprivileged has begun to increase, and infrastructure, the environment, and systems are being improved through the efforts of various groups and government policies that advocate children’s lives. Researches should be conducted to find a better way to provide a suitable urban environment for children. The process includes analyzing the physical environment factors that are closely related to the children and how they influence the children. This study firstly identifies the physical environmental factors affecting the children and establishes the relationship between urban physical environment factors and the personality, emotional development and the feeling of happiness of children. Second, it examines the importance of urban physical environment factors for child-friendly cities perceived by adults. Third, based on the indicators that measure the physical environmental factors of child-friendly cities, the research analyzed the current situation of 25 municipalities in Seoul Metropolitan City and compared it with the results of the research conducted on children and adults. The purpose of this study is to propose a blueprint for physical environment planning of child-friendly city. In this study, a survey was conducted to investigate the correlation between urban design factors and children's personality, emotional development, and happiness. The survey was centered on the area where child - friendly city certification was completed. 2 certified municipalities in Seoul, 2 in Gyeonggi Province, and 1 municipality in Gyeonggi Province which is in preparation for certification were included in the research. The questionnaire survey was conducted on 5 students from 4th and 6th grades of elementary school in the region. The research methodology of the study includes frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and parametric regression analysis. Urban planning factors derived from previous studies and literature review are mobility, accessibility, playability, safety, territoriality, and comfort. The measurement of the personality, emotional development and happiness of children was carried out using the standardization tool for measuring the personality and emotion of upper grades students designed by Korean Testing. The happiness scale, developed by Compressive Actual Condition of Korean Child and Adolescent, was revised to fit the purpose of this study. In addition, the analysis on the importance of urban planning factors was conducted using AHP analysis. The local affinity of the physical environment factors of 25 municipalities in Seoul was derived from the collectible data in the previous studies. This study came up with the results as follows. In the case of Seongnam-si in Gyeonggi Province, physical environment factors and sub-factors' mobility, accessibility, playability, safety, territoriality, and comfort perception are relatively higher than those in Gangdong-gu in Seoul. Affinity for local community was also higher in Seongnam-si in Gyeonggi Province than in Gangdong-gu in Seoul and Hwaseong-si in Gyeonggi Province. The correlation between urban physical environment and the personality, emotional development, and happiness, which is the main topic of this study, was proved to be significant. 1) The comfort, mobility and accessibility of a city are important factors for the achievement of children. 2) Urban safety is an important factor for the safety of children. 3) The comfort and mobility of a city are important factors in children 's sociality. 4) The physical environment factors of a city do not have a significant effect on the activeness of children. 5) The mobility, comfort, and accessibility of a city are important factors in for the autonomy of children. 6) The mobility and accessibility of a city are important factors for the happiness of children. In addition, local affinity was shown to have a significant effect on the relationship between urban physical factors and the children's personality, emotional development and euphoria, and proved to be a parametric condition. The results of AHP analysis are as follows. The importance of the physical environment factors of a city perceived by adults was high in order of safety, accessibility, comfort. Urban design factors, which had the most influence on children 's personality, emotional development, and happiness, were found out to be higher in order of mobility, comfort, and accessibility, and it differs from the result above. The urban architecture experts, parents, and teacher groups all selected safety as the most important factor. The teacher group responded that the factors are important in the order of accessibility and comfort, while the urban architecture experts and parents group responded in order of accessibility and comfort. The result of drawing a comprehensive index of child-friendliness of the physical environment factors in the cities of 25 municipalities in Seoul, showed there is no significant difference between the municipalities with child-friendliness certification and the ones in the process of certification. The results of this study proved that the physical environment factors influenced children `s personality, emotional development and happiness. There is a need for a new awareness of urban planning and design methods that take into account childhood personality, emotional development and happiness. In addition, city architecture experts, teachers at educational institutions, and children’s parents should be aware of this fact and try to build an environment that can positively help the child 's development.
