Nowadays, a large portion of the total energy is consumed by buildings because of urbanization, and majority of the energy is given from the electrical energy. Therefore, it is important to use the energy efficiency technology in buildings, such as Building Energy Management System (BEMS) and Demand Response (DR). To this end, one important basic step is the metering and monitoring of building loads. Smart meters have the abilities to measure real-time power consumption and to communicate remotely with a server. With the deployment of a smart meter in the building, power consumptions of the small-scale loads are available and those data give an insight of the building load characteristics. In this work, we installed a smart meter on each floor panelboard and the power consumption was measured according to the load type. The building load data consists of the total load and the small-scale loads by types. Load data from August 2015 to July 2016 had been collected and analyzed through k-means clustering algorithm to forecast the total building load. By using the small-scale loads as well as the total load, we propose a forecasting scheme for the campus building based on machine learning algorithms such as Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). The proposed forecasting scheme uses total load, temperature and small-scale loads as input data and train with five different input-vectors combination. The case study shows that the forecasting performance is improved with the small-scale loads. In addition, the performance is further improved with an ensemble technique that combines several forecasting results of different schemes.
