The purpose of this study was to assess (a) the effects that occupation based lifestyle intervention programmes have on the elderly people in the local community and (b) the practical viability or feasibility of such programmes. By using one group pre-post design, nine community-dwelling elderly participated into the study. The occupation based lifestyle intervention programme for this project, was designed from the lifestyle redesign programme. The programme structure consisted of twelve group sessions and one individual session spread over a 7 week period. To evaluate the effects that the programme had on the participants, the study utilises Occupational Balance (Korean version of Life Balance Inventory; K-LBI), Occupational Questionnaire (OQ), Korean Activity Card Sort (K-ACS) for activity partication status, Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) to measure the performance and satisfaction of the activity participation, Korean version of Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised (K-CESD-R) and finally the Korean version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment Instrument-BRIEF (WHOQOL-BREF) for health related quality of life assessments. In addition, participants were required to fill out a survey with regard to their subjective opinions on the validity, necessity and effectiveness of the program. Over the course of twelve group sessions, the average attendance rate amongst the 9 participants is 10.11 (SD=1.36) with the lowest individual attendance being 8 times. Having analysed the pre-post data, findings show that participants saw some improvements in overall occupational balance (p=0.012) and its sub-categories related to health (p=0.017), relationships (p=0.012), challenges and interests (p=0.012), and identity (p=0.012). Participants also experienced increases in activity participation status (p=0.008), performance (p=0.012) and satisfaction of activity participation (p=0.008). Furthermore, the results show changes in their leisure time (p=0.008) and rest time (p=0.008). Finally, there are some improvements in overall health related quality of life (p=0.034) and its sub-categories related to physical health (p=0.041) and falls in depression (p=0.012). Survey results indicate that the participants' subjective opinions on validity, necessity and effectiveness of the programme was at an appropriate level. In this study, it was confirmed that the occupation based lifestyle intervention programme has significant positive effects on occupational balance, time use, activity participation status, activity performance and satisfaction, depression and health related quality of life of the elderly in community. High attendance and positive survey results were also confirmed. From this point of view, the results of the research suggest that not only can the intervention programme be easily adopted by the elderly but also improve their health and lifestyle. This results can be used as a basis for occupational therapy that positively affects health and health-related factors by approaching the lifestyle of the elderly in the local community. It will also be used to enhance the opportunity for occupational therapists to contribute to community health based on evidence.
