This study examined the needs of an application for improving the social skills of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and designed, developed and evaluated an application containing social story intervention contents based on the stage of the ADDIE model(Seels & Richey, 1994). The development of this social story application took place between November 2018 and June 2019 and proceeded in five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. In the analysis stage, a survey polled 20 school teachers teaching students with ASD to assess how social skills training is conducted for students with ASD and the potential demand or needs for an application designed to enhance social skills. Teachers responded that they often face challenges in teaching social skills on a one-to-one basis to students with ASD, citing lack of time and resources in the school, and 85% of teachers answered that an application with the focus on improving the social skills of students with ASD is needed. In analyzing existing social story applications in other countries, social stories on some applications were incapable of modifying the stories for each student, and the social stories in the rest of the applications came with the hassle of creating a social story with all the pictures and writings in it to begin with. Therefore, the study concluded that an application development was indispensable to provide a social story that was created by professionals but also to select the picture and name of the main character. Based on the results derived from the analysis stage, the design stage aimed to factor in the characteristics and needs of students with ASD, and created guide maps and story boards accordingly. In the development stage, a professional development team was formed to select development tools, and the application was made through a total of fourteen processes and four official tests. The social stories on the application concerned the three most important social skills topics cited by teachers from the survey. Two experts with the experience of researching social story were invited to review the social stories using the social story check list. In the implementation stage, the developed social story application underwent review and registration processes on the Google Play Appstore, and anyone could download and use it. In the evaluation stage, heuristic usability evaluation was conducted on 10 teachers based on the their experience of using the application in the implementation stage. The study adopted the usability evaluation method developed by Kim Yong-wook (2008), and the results of the evaluation were all close to 'very good' in the areas of educational value, content implementation technology, content information and convenience. Finally, the application was fully developed after reflecting the corrections in accordance with the result of the usability evaluation. The significance of this study is as follows: First, it confirmed the need for an application to improve the social skills of students with ASD through the survey with teachers. In particular, the study highlighted the need for a social story application that is easily accessible, repeatable, and effective in motivating, given the answers that social skills were difficult to guide due to lack of time and resources and that an application is needed. Second, the basic principles and processes of application development were analyzed, and the application was designed and developed with full consideration of the characteristics and needs of ASD students in terms of content and function. Although there have been various attempts to develop software contents for special education, special educational applications remain few and far between in Korea. The development and release of this social story application could fill the gap for special educational software contents. Third, the social story application developed in this study was verified and released through the usability evaluation of teachers. Usability evaluation results have all been close to 'very good' in the areas of educational value, content implementation technology, content information and convenience. It is also available to anyone because it is released on the Google Play App Store. However, there are limitations since the application can only run on the Android operating system and various functions can not be fully incorporated into the app due to time and technical constraints. In addition, the intervention using this application was not applied to students with ASD. Therefore, in the future research, it is necessary to develop contents that can be executed in various operating systems and devices, and to embrace more diverse technologies to intrigue the interests of students with ASD. In addition, it is necessary to enact the application intervention to the students with ASD.
