A study on milieu language intervention in play communication between mother and children with developmental delay원문보기

Language has evolved from the early stage of human life along constant steps. However, some children have difficulty in acquiring language ability due to various reasons or have a language development delay. It results in emotional and behavioral defects and defects in cognitive ability and has a negative effect on social skills. Therefore, language is a technique that children with delayed language development must acquire to promote communication skills and maintain good social relations, and it is really far more important to teach language at the right time in the right manner. Various studies and developments of language intervention have been made, and studies on effects of the interventions continue. However, there is no study on whether or not parents who have children with delayed language development are provided with information on proper language intervention in effect. This study was to grasp frequency of utilization of milieu language intervention, which has been developed for causing the maximum effect in handicapped children’s language acquisition and generalization. I grasped the actual degree of utilization of milieu language intervention by mothers who have the children with delayed language development and are served by speech language pathology services, and compared and analyzed frequency of use between the mothers who were served by speech language pathology services and mothers who were not served by speech language pathology. I studied four mothers who lived in Daegu district and had children with delayed language development aged two to three years old who were receiving speech language pathology and four mothers who had children with delayed language development aged two to three years old who were not receiving speech language pathology. A test was made at a private speech language pathology center in Daegu district, and the frequency of use was measured through observation of a one to one free lay situation of a mother and a child. The play situation was recorded on a video tape and the play time was limited to half an hour. A researcher measured frequency of use while watching the recorded video. ‘child-centered demonstration, time-delay technique, incidental teaching procedures, and mand-model procedure’ among milieu language intervention procedures were selected as analysis items to measure frequency of use.
Results of the study are as follows. 1) Average frequencies of use of language interventions used by the mothers having children with delayed language development are as follows. An average frequency of use of child-centered demonstration was 31.5, an average frequency of use of time-delay technique was 2.3, an average frequency of use of mand-model procedure was 5.8, and an average frequency of use of incidental teaching procedures was 0.6, namely, the frequency of use of language interventions was shown in order of mand-model procedure, time-delay technique, and incidental teaching procedures. All of the group of mothers, who were served by speech language pathology services, and the group of mothers, who were not served by speech language pathology services, showed that frequency of use of child-centered demonstration was the highest and the frequency of use of incidental teaching procedures was the lowest.
2) Differences in frequency of use of intervention between the mothers who had children with delayed language development and were served by speech language pathology services and the mothers who had children with delayed language development but were not served by speech language pathology services were investigated by items. In relation with frequency of use of child-centered demonstration, the group of mothers who were served by speech language pathology services showed an average of 49.8 times, but the group of mothers who were not served by speech language pathology services showed an average of 13.3 times. In relation with frequency of use of time-delay technique, the group of mothers who were served by speech language pathology services showed an average of 4.0 times, but the group of mothers who were not served by speech language pathology services showed an average of 0.5 times. In relation with frequency of use of mand-model procedure, the group of mothers who were served by speech language pathology services showed an average of 9.5 times, but the group of mothers who were not served by speech language pathology services showed an average of 2.0 times. In relation with frequency of use of incidental teaching procedures, the group of mothers who were served by speech language pathology services showed an average of 1.3 times, but the group of mothers who were not served by speech language pathology services showed an average of 0.0 times. Therefore, through the frequencies of use by techniques, it was revealed that there were significant differences between the two groups, and the mothers who were served by speech language pathology services was higher in frequency of use of milieu language intervention than the mothers who were not served by speech language pathology services.
As a result of this study, the mothers who are served by speech language pathology services are provided with information on language intervention that they can utilize at home through a speech language pathology center and offer it to their children with delayed language development. Based on the above result, parents having children with delayed language development must recognize importance of early intervention with interest in children’s language development delay, and speech language pathologists must make efforts so that parents can do proper language intervention at home through parent education for connectivity and effectiveness of treatment.
