Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the differences in cervical deep flexor muscle thickness(SCM muscle and deep cervical flexor muscles) depending on five levels of pressure on the bio-feedback unit and eight eye direction during cranial-cervical flexor exercise in healthy subjects. The cervical flexor muscle can be assessed using ultrasound imaging. This work focuses on the evaluation of the thickness of the longus colli(LC) and Sternocleidomastoid (SCM).
Methods: In total, 27 subjects (18 males and 9 females) with no medical history related to neurological disorders and musculoskeletal disorders were enrolled in this study. They were instructed to perform CCF exercise with five different pressures (20 mmHg, 22 mmHg, 24 mmHg, 26 mmHg, and 28 mmHg) using a bio-feedback unit for cervical pressure, according to eight different eye directions (inferior or lateral at 0°, 20°, 40° and 60°). SCM muscle and deep cervical flexor muscle thicknesses were measured according to eye directions and pressure levels with bio-feedback unit using ultrasonography.
Statistical Analysis: Values are represented as a mean ± standard deviation, which were calculated using SPSS 20.0 for Windows. ANOVA with repeated measurements was performed for the comparison and analysis of muscle thickness difference according to eye angle and pressure level in neck and neck cervical muscle groups.
Results: The results of analyses for the measured variables were as follows: 1) thickness of the deep cervical flexion muscles was most significant during the craniocervical flexion exercise with a downward or lateral eye at 20°; 2) in the case of neck ribs, the muscle became thicker as the pressure increased, but with a lower root thickness at 28 mmHg, compared to 0° (p<.05).
Conclusion: Muscle activations in the heart-neck flexion and neck muscles are minimal during head-neck bending exercises with the eyes involved. Thus, these exercises can be effective for clinical neck pain patients and can play a preventive role in normal adults.
