Object: The purpose of this study was to determine effective intervention method for improving the flexibility of the hamstring muscles, proprioception, and dynamic balance by applying Kaltenborn-Evjenth (K-E), proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), and static stretching to the shortened hamstring muscles, as well as to provide evidence for a clinically effective stretching method by identifying differences in the effects of different methods.
Methods: Healthy adults in their 20s who lived in Daejeon city, Korea, with a tightness of the hamstring observed during the active knee extension test was randomly assigned to the K-E stretching (n = 14), PNF stretching (n = 15), and static stretching (n = 14) groups. Each stretching method was applied to each group. In order to evaluate the hamstring flexibility before and after the intervention, the active knee extension test was performed. The joint position sense test was performed to examine proprioception, and the Y balance test was performed to determine dynamic balance. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA to compare differences between groups, and the paired t-test was used to compare differences before and after the intervention. The significance level was set at .05.
Results: The results of this study were as follows :
1. Hamstring flexibility showed significant differences among the three groups after intervention (p <.05), and there was a statistically significant difference between the groups before and after intervention in each group (p .05), but there was statistically significant difference between the K-E stretching and PNF stretching groups before and after intervention (p .05).
3. 3.Dynamic balance was significantly different among the three groups in the anterior direction (p .05). There was a statistically significant difference among the three groups before and after intervention (p <.01).
Conclusion: K-E, PNF, and static stretching all helped to improve the flexibility, proprioception, and dynamic balance of the hamstring muscles. However, K-E stretching was the most effective method for increasing flexibility, while both K-E and PNF stretching were effective in terms of proprioception. The results of this study demonstrate that K-E stretching significantly improves flexibility, proprioception, and dynamic balance ability, and it is expected that various stretching methods, as well as clinics for physical therapy intervention, will be available to patients and the general public and that more diverse and effective programs will be developed clinically in the future.
