The purpose of this study is to investigate childcare teachers’ perceptions and demands on STEAM education for young children. The following two questions were set as a guidepost for achieving the research purpose: ● Research Questions 1: Are there any significant difference in the childcare teachers’ perceptions of STEAM education for young children? ● Research questions 2. Are there any significant differences in the childcare teachers’ demands for STEAM education for young children?
The subjects of this study were 309 childcare teachers working in daycare centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The data collection for this study was conducted in the order of a preliminary survey and the main survey. The survey instrument used in this study was a questionnaire on childcare teachers’ perceptions and demands on STEAM education for young children,' which was revised from an existing questionnaire initially developed for kindergarten teachers based on previous studies on STEAM education. The IBM SPSS 25.0 was used to analyze the collected data to examine childcare teachers’ perceptions and demands on STEAM education for young children. A summary of the results of this study is as follows.
First, the level of childcare teachers’ understanding about STEAM education for young children was not high (around average); however, the level of their perceived necessity of STEAM education for young children turned out to be high (above average). The levels of understanding and perceived necessity were different depending on demographic backgrounds. Regarding the level of understanding, a significant difference was found among different categories of such demographic variables as childcare teacher’ age, class age (age of children in charge), education, and position. Concerning the level of perceived necessity, a significant difference was found in such demographic variables as childcare teacher’s age and education. It was also found that childcare teachers’ perceptions of the difference between STEAM education and Nuri curriculum were significantly related to the age of children in their charge.
Second, childcare teachers reported an average demand for STEAM education contents, a high demand for educational environment, an above-average demand for the field application, and a high demand for enhancing teacher expertise and participation. Concerning the demand on education contents, a significant difference was found among different categories of such demographic variables as teacher’s class age (the age of children in charge) and education. For the demand on education environment, a significant difference was found in such demographic variables as teacher’s institution type, class age, and education. Regarding the demand on the field application, a significant difference was found in such variables as teacher’s age, institution type, class age, education, and position. Finally, about the demand for the enhancement of teacher expertise and participation, a significant difference was found in the variables of teacher’s age, institution type, education, and position.
In sum, although childcare teachers showed an average level of understanding about STEAM education for young children, they perceived highly of the necessity of STEAM education and presented a high level of demands for it. These results suggest that STEAM education program development and implementation should be extended to daycare centers, that support should be available to help childcare teachers increase their understanding of STEAM education, and that effective teacher education and policy should be developed in a way that can be practically applied in the field.
