The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the impact of block, dramatic, manipulative and art plays on cognitive process, language, spatial-perceptual, and social development of young children. In order to achieve this, the following research questions were addressed:
[Question] 1. What effects do types of play including block, dramatic, manipulative, and art play have on the development of cognitive process in young children? 2. What effects do types of play including block, dramatic, manipulative, and art play have on language development of young children? 3. What effects do types of play including block, dramatic, manipulative, and art play have on spatial-perceptual development of young children? 4. What effects do type of play including block, dramatic, manipulative, and art play have on social development of young children?
In response to the research questions, 78 of 5 year old young children enrolling in a kindergarten program in B city. The subjects of this research were randomly selected and assigned into each type of play as follows: 18 children into block play as Experimental group 1, 19 children into dramatic play as Experimental group 2, 19 children into manipulative play as Experimental group 3, and 20 children into art play as Experimental group 4. The average ages of the subjects were 73.06 months for Experimental group 1, 72.52 months for Experimental group 2, 72.11 months for Experimental group 3 and 72.85 months for Experimental group 4 respectively. Experimental treatments for this research were conducted from September 3rd, 2018 to October 12th, 2018, which took 6 weeks to complete and 24 experimental sessions were included. The young children under each experimental play group were arranged into a group of 4 or 5 and they did their assigned play for 40 minutes each experimental session. Each type of play was arranged with appropriate play materials and environment through literature reviews and was designed by aligning with the theme given by the kindergarten program as well as conducting validity tests by experts. This study applied ‘K-ABC Ⅱ(Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children, Second Edition)’ to test cognitive process of the subjects, and ‘REVT(Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test)’ to assess the language ability of the subjects. Also, 'Spatial Ability Test for Young Children' was used to test spatial ability of the subjects and ‘SAC(The Social Attributes Checklist)’ was applied to assess the social ability of the subjects. In order to analyze the impact of block, dramatic, manipulative and art plays on cognitive process, language, spacial-perceptual, and social ability of young children, all the data collected through pre-test and post-test was taken into One-way ANOVA using the SPSS 25.0 program. When there was a statistically valid difference, the post-analysis was conducted using Scheffé, LSD, Tamhané. According to the results of the comparisons and analysis, the effects of each type of play on block, dramatic, manipulative and art plays on cognitive process, language, spacial-perceptual, and social ability of young children are as follows: First, the post-test scores of cognitive process ability of the subjects in all experimental groups were higher than those from the pre-test. Also, there was no significant difference found in 'Total Cognitive Process Ability' for the groups. However, there was a difference among the experimental groups in terms of sub-areas in the study. The young children participating in manipulative play and art play showed statistically valid higher scores in the area of 'Sequential Processing' than those who participated in dramatic and block play. In addition, in the area of 'Simultaneous Processing', those who participated in manipulative and art play had statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in dramatic play and block play. Second, the post-test scores of language ability of the subjects in all experimental groups were higher than those from the pre-test. In addition, there was a difference among the groups both in 'Total Language Ability' and its one of the sub-areas ‘Receptive Expressive Vocabulary'. In 'Total Language Ability', those participating in dramatic play had statically valid higher scores than those who participated in block and manipulative play. Also, those participating in art play obtained statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in manipulative play. In the area of 'Receptive Expressive Vocabulary', those who participated in dramatic play and art play had statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in manipulative play. Third, the post-test scores of spatial-perceptive ability of the subjects in all experimental groups were higher than those from the pre-test. Also, there was a difference among the groups in 'Total Spatial-Perceptual Ability' as well as its sub-areas including 'Eye-motor Coordination', 'Spatial Reasoning', 'Figure-ground Perception', 'Spatial Visualization', and 'Positioning in Space Perception'. In 'Total Spatial-Perceptual Ability', those participating in block play and art play had statically valid higher scores than those who participated in dramatic play and manipulative play. In addition, those participating in block play and art play showed statistically valid higher scores in the areas of ‘Eye-motor Coordination', 'Spatial Reasoning' and 'Spatial Visualization' than those who participated in dramatic play and manipulative play. In the area of 'Figure-ground Perception', those who participated in block play obtained statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in dramatic play and manipulative play. Also, in the area of 'Positioning in Space Perception', those participating in block play had statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in manipulative play, and those who participated in art play showed statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in dramatic play and manipulative play. Fourth, the post-test scores of social ability of the subjects in all experimental groups were higher than those from the pre-test. Also, there was a difference among the groups in ‘Total Social Ability' and its sub-areas including 'Individual Attributes', 'Social Skill Attributes', 'Peer Relationship Attributes.' In 'Total Social Ability', those who participated in manipulative play had statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in block play. Moreover, in the areas of 'Social Skill Attributes' and 'Peer Relationship Attributes', those participating in manipulative play had statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in block play. In the area of 'Individual Attributes', those participating in art play obtained statistically valid higher scores than those who participated in block play. In conclusion, this study results indicated that four types of play including block play, dramatic play, manipulative play, and art play all had effect on the ability of young children in the experimental groups in terms of their cognitive process, language, spatial-perceptual, and social ability. In addition, there were meaningful differences in both total abilities and their sub-areas according to each type of play. Therefore, this study result revealed that play clearly affects the development of young children and there are certain types of play that are particularly effective in developing specific areas of ability in young children. Thus, it is highly recommended that preschool and kindergarten programs include types of play that encourage young children to develop their specific areas of ability. Furthermore, practitioners in the field should recognize that these types of play should encourage the development of cognitive process, language, spatial- perceptual, and social ability in young children.
The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the impact of block, dramatic, manipulative and art plays on cognitive process, language, spatial-perceptual, and social development of young children. In order to achieve this, the following research questions were addressed:
