In this study, it is analyzed to provide flexible learning space on university campuses that the method of supporting the learning space using the intermediate space in the campus which is already prepared. The learning space is a designated space for students to study. In the past, most of those spaces were aim to support learning activities, such as libraries. However, nowadays, it has been increased the use of space to support various activities rather than just learning activities. For instance, the coffee shop is currently used not only for break time purpose but also for leaning activity purpose. Through the analysis results, it is proposed the direction of support for learning space using the medium space according to the behavior of using the learning space of university students. This study has been performed with as followed methods; literature survey, field inspection survey, and survey. Through the literature survey, it has been found out the current method of managing university facilities, arrangement, function, and type of space in the intermediate space. Also, I tried to define the concept of creativity and the supporting factors for the creative environment. Finally, through prior research analysis, I have looked at the previous method of implementing the space in quantitative way and supporting the learning space and the office to support the creative learning-work. After the analysis of overseas research, I have learned about the need to change into a new learning space and its progress and effectiveness through actual creative space composition. Based on the literature survey, four university lounge spaces locating in Seoul were aimed. And among the intermediate spaces, lounge area which is mostly used by students was focused and on-the spot observation has been conducted for those areas. Upon the observations, it has been shown that the number of afternoon users is mostly bigger than the number of before noon user. Furthermore, instead of filling the furniture in the target area, the more efficiency was found when the location of furniture is mobile and more spacing. And it has been found that the types of locating furniture were various. Finally, in order to achieve more specific data, the survey has been conducted for the students where the on-spot observation was conducted. The follow lists are the item which was included in the survey; learning space, type of study, location of the desired lounge facilities and essential elements, current lounge facility satisfaction, and campus activity satisfaction. Out of the total 160 parts, 151 were collected and frequency, percentage, average, T test, and one-way layout analysis were performed using SPSS Statistics 25. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, the most frequently used learning space on campus was still surveyed as a library, but in addition, learning activities were found in various spaces. Excluding the library, coffee shop(locating in either outside or inside of campus), lounges, lecture rooms, other rest areas, and houses are listed. The common thing among them is that the user can use listed space with less regulation then library. In the case of a classroom, the space itself has a designated purpose, however, when there is no lecture in the classroom, it can be considered as a kind of lounge. On learning activities, usage of diverse spaces is reflecting the needs of variety space for the students. Therefore, considering the circumstance which the traditional boundary between learning space has been vague, the needs of new respond is increasing. Second, the ‘short distance’ was highly ticked for the reason why they are using the class room, personal learning activity and group study. And the ‘poor accessibility to inner university space’ was ranked as a second highest reason for the people who are using the outside of campus. Furthermore, upon the question “where do you wish to build a new space for rest”, 74.9% of participants (almost three out of fourth) answered on their own college building. In response to the survey that supported these results, 18.4 percent of the respondents said that they use the campus space for intermission, and 78.6 percent of the respondents answered that they are using the rest space during the intermission. Based on these data, it can be anticipated that enough utilization will be achieved when the lounge is built in the intermediate space in the college. Third, regarding the desired lounge type, the preferred form for individual and group activities was found to be different. Personal tables are found to be the most preferred form of personal activity, which seems to be the most preferred because of their distinct personal areas and shapes suitable for solo use. With the preference for some independent space suitable for single user, one-fifth of respondents showed preference for the least constrained space, such as the 'backless sofa + stool + table' form and 'stair-type chair'. When it comes to group activity, it has been found that they tend to choose a big size table due to the convenience of putting their luggage and having conversation. Furthermore, since most of all university students are using their own laptop to study, they would prefer bigger space to put their properties. More than half of the respondents answered that the more sofa, chairs, and table are needed for lounge space, which can be inferred that students are feeling either current space is insufficient or uncomfortable. And nearly one out of third of respondents chose usage of convenience to electronic devices such as socket-outlets and Wi-Fi. Because usage of electronic devices is indispensable for modern people, supporting those utility is not an optional thing but a mandatory thing. Fourth, the on-spot observation research indicates that users are using the spaces in different way in accordance with the furniture location and sort of furniture. When the table is mostly located, people tend to use the space as learning activity purpose, while sofa or tea table spaces are used for rest purpose. In case of mixture of table and sofa, those two aforementioned activities appeared simultaneously. Fifth, specifically, in satisfaction against lounge space, campus, facility and overall campus activity, the A campus was relatively lower then the others. It can be considered that the physical environment is one of the contributors to effect on the satisfaction against the university. The other target universities except the A are supporting relatively better environment then any other university. (For instance, they are equipped with variety spaces for students in multiple places.) It is seen that the physical environment is one of the contributors why the other university participants’ satisfaction is higher than university A. Through the research, it has been found that in order to compose the flexible learning space, it is required that the university’s support to figure out the change of learning space. It is required to perform the research(interview or survey) that what kind of spaces are needed for students who is actually using it. Additionally, since the spaces can be required in different way based on their major, the method of support should be progressed accordingly. So, it is recommended to utilize the intermediate space or remaining space utmost level instead of building a massive construction such as new building or extension which requires huge budget. In order to realize this, the investigation about where the students are using for studying has to be preceded and via this investigation, the least studying space should be utilized first. Lastly, the new spaces for leaning purpose should not only embrace the needs of variety leaning space but also the prepare the future. So with the using a variable wall and mobile furniture, the space flexibility should be improved.
In this study, it is analyzed to provide flexible learning space on university campuses that the method of supporting the learning space using the intermediate space in the campus which is already prepared. The learning space is a designated space for students to study. In the past, most of those spaces were aim to support learning activities, such as libraries.
