The purpose of this study is to analyze young children’s smarpthone use and the relation between their mothers’ perception of the smartphone use and young children’s self-resilience, and thereby to lay the academic foundation for the smartphone use for the healthy development of young children. To achieve that, the study issues are established as follows:
Study Issue 1. How is young children’s smartphone use? Study Issue 2. How is their mothers’ perception of the smartphone use? Study Issue 3. How is the relation between young children’s smartphone use, their mothers’ perception, and their self-resilience? 3-1 How is the relation between young children’s smartphone use time and their self-resilience? 3-2 How is the relation between their mothers’ perception of the smartphone use and their self-resilience?
Firstly, young children’s smartphone use was analyzed. As a result, in terms of the first time when young children used a smartphone, 13-24 months accounted for the highest rate. In terms of their smarthpone use frequency, using 1-2 times weekly accounted for the highest rate. In terms of their average weekday use time, less than 30 minutes was the highest rate. In terms of their average weekend and holiday use time, less than one hour accounted for the highest rate. In terms of the reason why young children are allowed to use a smartphone, the answer ‘using a smarpthone while eating’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the main use places, the answer ‘households’ including their own house, the house of their relative, and the house of their friend accounted for the highest rate. Regarding a person with whom they use a smartphone, a parent accounted for the highest rate. Regarding their use contents, watching children’s stories or songs accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the mothers’ answer to the question about the necessity of their young children’s smartphone use, a majority of them answered that the smartphone use was needed. Regarding the reason for the necessity of their young children’s smartphone use, the answer ‘helpful in the learning aspect’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the reason for no need of their young children, the answer ‘the concern over visual disorder made by long exposure to electromagnetic waves’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the mothers’ intention of participating in smartphone education, the answer ‘having an intention of participation’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the education type that they want, the answer ‘having the education of smartphone use from a professional instructor at a professional education institute’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the educational contents that they want to learn, the answer ‘the education of parents’ roles in young children’s smartphone use’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the question about the mothers’ difficulty with smartphone use instruction, 101 persons (49%) replied ‘yes’ and 105 persons (51%) replied ‘no’. Regarding the reason for difficulty, the answer ‘their young children’s insistence on continuous smartphone use regardless of times and places’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the method of stopping young children’s smartphone use, the answer ‘replacing it with other activities’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the rules of young children’s smartphone use, the answer ‘there are rules’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the contents of rules, the answer ‘there is the rule for use time’ accounted for the highest rate. Regarding the necessity of rules, the answer ‘the rules are needed’ accounted for the highest rate. Secondly, differences between main variables were analyzed depending on the general characteristics of young children and their mothers. As a result, the weekday smartphone use time was significantly different depending on the mothers’ education, monthly household income, the number of family members, and young children’s age. The weekend and holiday smartphone use time was significantly different depending on the mothers’ education, monthly household income, and young children’s age. The mothers’ perception of the development of young children depending on the mothers’ age, the mothers’ perception of physical development depending on the mothers’ age, the mothers’ perception of cognitive development depending on the mothers’ age, the mothers’ perception of social and emotional development depending on the mothers’ age and their young children’s age, and the mothers’ perception of language development depending on the mothers’ age and monthly household income were statistically and significantly different. Thirdly, a correlation analysis was conducted to find the relation between young children’s smartphone use time and their self-resilience. As a result, their average weekend or holiday smartphone use time had a significantly negative correlation with their overall self-resilience. In terms of the relation between their average weekend or holiday smartphone use time and the sub factors of their self-resilience, the use time had significantly negative correlations with self-control and initiative. The difference between the mothers’ difficulty with smartphone use instruction and young children’s self-resilience was analyzed. As a result, attachment, self-control, initiative, and all categories of self-resilience were significantly different depending on their difficulty with instruction. Through verification, it was possible to clearly analyze young children’s smartphone use at home, their mothers’ perception and overall situations. This study concluded that there was a close correlation between young children’s smartphone use time and their self-resilience, and that young children’s self-resilience was different depending on the mothers’ difficulty with smartphone use instruction. The conclusion lays the foundation for the necessity of intervening in young children’s smartphone use urgently. Therefore, it will be necessary to conduct continuous research to suggest a more realistic and efficient method of intervening in young children’s smartphone use.
