The Effects of Adapted Melodic Intonation Therapy on Mand, Tact and Intraverbal in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
Yeri Park Abstract of a thesis at Baekseok University for the degree of Master of Education Applied behavior Analysis
This study was conducted to develop intervention strategy utilizing musical stimuli incorporated with applied behavior analysis to facilitate emergence of vocal verbal behaviors in young children with autism spectrum disorders. The researcher designed Adapted Melodic Intonation Therapy(Adapted MIT) revised and manipulated to accommodate to the characteristics and needs of young children with autism spectrum disorders in perspective of applied behavior analysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Adapted MIT on mand, tact, intraverbal in children with autism spectrum disorders. The researcher examined the effects of adapted MIT on mand, tact and intraverbal in 2 children with autism spectrum disorders, Multiple probe design across behaviors was employed to verify the effectiveness of the adapted MIT for the participants. The results indicated that adapted MIT was effective to enhance mand, tact and intraverbal in both participants. Limitations relevant to this study were discussed and the need of follow-up study was suggested.
Key words: Autism spectrum disorders, mand, tact, intraverbal, verbal behavior, communication skills, Melodic intonation therapy(MIT), music therapy
