The effect of tactile medium-focused group art therapy on interpersonal relationship and self-expression for the elderly원문보기

The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of tactile medium-based group art therapy on senior citizens’ interpersonal relationships and self-expression. The research subjects are senior citizens aged above 65 years old who use two senior citizen centers by collaborating with Senior Welfare Service Center of S-gu. The samples are restricted to the senior citizens who score above 24 in Korean-Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE-K). By excluding the subjects who have health issues and personal issues, eight senior citizens of A Senior Citizen Center are included in the experimental group and eight senior citizens of B Senior Citizen Center are selected as the control group. Tactile medium-based group art therapy has been provided to the experimental group from September 2019 to mid November 2019. The therapy consists of 14 sessions, provided twice a week, and the duration of each therapy is 50-60 minutes. The therapy was not provided to the control group. To verify the effectiveness of the group art therapy, interpersonal relationship scale and self-expression assessment scale(ABAS) were applied to both groups. After the completion of the group art therapy in the experimental group, two art pieces were selected from the 2nd and 13th session which have similar techniques and media. The author of this paper and three other assessors measured art self-expression assessment scale (ASEA). An independent t-test was conducted to verify the homogeneity between the groups and changes in the scales pre- and post-treatment, and a paired t-test was conducted to examine the changes in art self-expression assessment scale (ASEA). The tactile medium-based group art therapy used for this research brings insights from the previous studies related to art treatment for senior citizens (Jung, 2005) and those related to tactile medium (Lee, 2014). The 14 sessions are classified into early part (1-3 sessions), middle part (4-11 sessions), and latter part (12-14 sessions). Each phase encourages the exploration of the tactile mediam and self-expression. The research results indicate that the experimental group had significantly higher interpersonal relationship and self-expression scores than the control group. The art self-expression assessment scale (ASEA) also exhibited statistically significant improvement. As such, the tactile medium-based group art therapy has a positive impact on the senior citizens’ interpersonal relationships, self-expression, and art self-expression. This research contributes to the literature by implementing group art therapies and verifying its effectiveness based on the consideration of the senior citizens’ emotional status and social characteristics.
