The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the dramatic play on children’s self-expression and peer interaction, and help actively use the dramatic play by recognizing its educational value as an alternative to overcome the limitations of the dramatic play and the children play in the childhood education field. The research questions selected for this are as follows.
[Research Question 1] What effect does the dramatic play have on the children’s self-expression(content area, voice area, nonverbal area)? [Research Question 2] What effect does the dramatic play have on the children’s peer interaction(verbal interaction, nonverbal interaction)?
According to the research purpose above, this researcher selected 20 children 4 years old in L kindergarten in S city as the experimental group and did 20 children in the same kindergarten as the comparison group. For the next six weeks, the dramatic play was conducted to the children of the experimental group by this researcher with 6 year education career for about 30-40 minutes for a total of 10 sessions, 1-2 times a week, and Nuri process activities on the same topic were conducted to those of the comparison group by the homeroom teacher with a six year education career. In order to investigate what effect the dramatic play had on the children’s self-expression, the self-expression test tool that Park Geum Hee(2014) revised and complemented based on self-assertiveness components of Rakos and Schroeder(1980) was used. In addition, in order to investigate what effect the dramatic play had on the children’s peer interaction, the peer interaction test tool that Uhm Eun Na(2006) revised and complemented based on Park Jin Jae(2002) was used. With the data collected through pre- and post-test of the experimental group and the comparison group, the effect was analyzed through an independent sample t-test using SPSS Win 22.0 statistical program.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, it was indicated that the dramatic play had a positive effect on the improvement of the children’s self-expression. The children of the experimental group who conducted the dramatic play had higher average scores in all areas(content area, voice area, nonverbal area) of self-expression than those of the comparison group, and the results of analysis of pre- and post-test showed a statistically significant difference. Second, it was indicated that the dramatic play had a positive effect on the improvement in the children’s peer interaction. The children of the experimental group had higher average scores in all areas(verbal interaction, nonverbal interaction) of the peer interaction than those of the comparison group, and it was indicated that the results of analysis of pre- and post-test showed a statistically significant difference. The results of this study suggest that the dramatic play is a meaningful activity in forming successful social relations by actively expressing their thoughts and feelings and communicating positively based on the verbal, nonverbal interaction. In addition, this study has an educational value in that children obtained the opportunity to learn and grow as the teacher constructed and developed the dramatic play with children, and the dramatic play would be able to contribute to the active use in children education field.
