The purpose of this study is to analyze and model the strategy for Reading to Learn as a part of the Collaborative Classes. Reading to Learn is a teaching method that can be utilized directly by the teacher librarian during subject classes. However, currently, Collaborative Classes are only being used as a way to retrieve information on learning themes and are not being used at full capacity. We hypothesize that if teacher librarians were able to participate in Collaborative Classes with the subject teachers, the role of the teacher librarians would expand beyond the status quo.
In order to establish the contents of strategy for Reading to Learn, the current subject curriculum, reading strategies and advanced research were looked at. The component factors for the strategy for Reading to Learn are deduced by analyzing the 2015 Korean High School Revised National Curriculum’s contents system and library and information life subject curriculum standards. From these two curricula, the types and fields of text area, meaning structure, cognitive strategy, and reading methods and skills are deduced and categorized.
Accordingly, the types of texts are divided into informational, persuasive, fellowship, and emotional, and the fields were demarcated into humanities, arts, science, culture, and technology. Furthermore, the meaning structures are classified into taxonomy, compare and contrast, argumentative, problem solving, expository, and cause and effect. In addition, we identify that cognitive strategies depend on cognitive, factual, inferential, critical, appreciative, and creative comprehension, while cognitive functions depend on context consideration, immersion, fact checking, inference, criticizing, appreciation, application, communication, and accommodation. Lastly, after analyzing the earlier research, we propose that reading skills, an area separate from the aforementioned realms, are shaped into concentrative/spreadable type, multiple divided shape type, and grade of ranks type's graphic organizer.
From these categories of strategy for Reading to Learn, we establish a prototype strategy model for Reading to Learn and apply them to five courses from the Integrated Society Curriculum and five learning activities from the Integrated Science Curriculum. The results show that the types and fields of texts depend on the subject’s tendency. In fact, the types of texts converge to information provision and persuasion while the fields converge to social and natural sciences. On the other hand, both the meaning structures and cognitive strategies are shown to be independent of subject’s tendency. Using these results, the final strategy model for Reading to Learn is established and through focus group interviews with senior teacher librarians, who have extensive experience of Collaborative Classes, we attempt to identify ways through which teacher librarians could collaborate together with the subject teachers.
The information from the learning activities in the contents subject text books only represents a summary of the core learning contents. Thus, by analyzing the text areas using a graphic organizer, diversified reading materials could be provided and subject classes can be expanded. We also suggest that the questioning in the learning activity should go beyond simply answering the questions to activities like discussions and diaries that create an independent reading program that allows for a more fruitful curriculum.
