The purpose of this study is to investigate the beliefs and preferences of pre-service English teachers in relation to nine types of pre-listening activities. Unlike previous studies which focused on a few specific pre-listening activities, and on identifying and comparing their effectiveness, in this study, a variety of pre-listening activities were utilized in an attempt to investigate the perceptions and preferences of Korean pre-service English teachers with regard to pre-listening activities. To this end, a questionnaire survey was conducted by 88 pre-service English teachers majoring in English education in Seoul, Korea. The Survey is composed of 47 items, as well as open-ended questions in order to collect further opinions related to their answers. The pre-listening items are based on the classification by Chang & Read(2006) and consist of: Topic preparation, Vocabulary instruction, Preview the question, and Input repetition. These four items are divided into nine items, which are: watching visual materials regarding the topic of listening activity, reading a text in students' mother tongue or in English regarding the topic of listening activity, giving information about the listening text to students, studying vocabulary which is included in listening text, studying vocabulary with its pronunciation, teacher's reading questions aloud for students, students' checking questions by themselves, and listening to a simplified version of original listening text before the actual listening activity. The collected data was analyzed by SPSS 22.0 and the findings of this study are as follows. Although most of the pre-service English teachers agree about the need for pre-listening activities, few have utilized them in the classroom. The most effective pre-listening activity chosen by the pre-service English teachers is watching visual materials, and teaching vocabulary with its pronunciation is the most preferable activity to utilize in class. Reading a text in Korean is chosen as the least effective and least preferable pre-listening activity. For both monologue and dialogue, the types of pre-listening activities chosen by teachers was the same, as was the preferred order in which they would be used. However, when it comes to the level of students, there is a difference in the types of pre-listening activities they prefer. Activities which can provide direct information about the topic or vocabulary, or involve the teacher's intervention, are selected for low-level students. Whereas reading a text in English is chosen for high-level students as it aims to improve a different language skills while also supporting the students' listening skill. The results of this study suggest that an emphasis on pre-listening tasks which can be utilized without practical limitations, is required when teaching listening in the classroom. In addition, teachers may require additional training as they often struggle to devise and design suitable pre-listening activities and therefore they hesitate to use pre-listening activities although they are well aware of the advantages of them. Also, if appropriate pre-listening activities were more easily accessible, for example, by providing them as part of a teacher's guide, it is likely that listening activities could be taught more effectively.
