With a paradigm shift occurring rapidly across society amid the 4th Industrial Revolution, the convergence of information communication technology (ICT) and cultural industries has become prominent. The convergence of ICT and culture has created services that maximize the overall benefits for consumers. In this context, virtual reality (VR) technology has gained attention because it provides customers with simulated experiences of arts and culture and allows them to make a decision based on their experiences. In the cultural context, such convergence is most actively occurring in museums. Although the Korean museum ecosystem has seen steady growth in quantitative terms, it faces an array of problems, including increasing financial pressures as a result of the free admission policy and visitors’ attitudes that have been more unfavorable. Accordingly, the museum ecosystem currently requires changes for better competitiveness and collaboration. VR technology is attracting attention as a means for solving these challenges. However, a new museum ecosystem that primarily uses VR technology has not been clearly defined in the literature; the roles of stakeholders are thereby unclear, posing a problem. Moreover, museums have not established guidelines for measuring the benefits of exploiting VR content accurately. In this way, they fail to develop services that can meet consumer needs and VR technology has therefore not been validated for use in museum settings. However, it is believed that VR technology will become an integral part of the cultural industry in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution. This study therefore aims to determine strategies for revitalizing the museum sector based on VR content. Specifically, considering that VR convergence has not been firmly established as an ecosystem, this study aims to define a VR-enabled museum ecosystem from the perspectives of the business ecosystem. Second, given the lack of consumer-oriented services in museums, the causal relationship between VR museum content features and user acceptance is examined. Finally, this study aims to measure the economic value of VR museum content and suggest its potential as an income source given financial problems facing the majority of museums as a result of the free admission policy. Taken together, these research objectives are summarized in the following questions:
Q1: How can a VR-enabled museum ecosystem be defined? Q2: Is there any causal relationship between VR museum content features and user acceptance? Q3: What is the economic value of VR museum content?
To answer these questions, our research was divided into three sub-studies: Study 1 to derive a VR-enabled museum ecosystem model, Study 2 to assess user intention to accept VR museum content, and Study 3 to estimate the economic value of VR museum content. First, in Study 1, an existing museum ecosystem (As-Is) and a VR-enabled museum ecosystem (To-Be) were derived from the service value network (Basole & Rouse, 2008). A conceptual model of the museum ecosystem was created in assistance with five experts in museum areas; each was interviewed twice. Analysis of the collected data revealed the following three elements. First, while the existing museum ecosystem is described as a platform for watching and enjoying exhibitions, the VR-enabled museum ecosystem is a more extensive platform with the ability to allow possession for consumers; they can collect items being displayed at exhibitions or purchase digital content they want. Second, the value actors in the VR industries are integrated into every hierarchical level of the VR-enabled museum ecosystem. At each hierarchical level, actors involved in VR technology were additionally included. In particular, at the level of providing services or exhibition level, the VR content platform, which performs the role of deriving a business model and services, was added as a major value actor, leading to a comprehensive ecosystem, including technology and management as a component. Third, the value actors within the museum are required to have more expertise in VR technology and content. As an integrated understanding of its components including management and technology is important in the VR-enabled museum ecosystem, museum studies, VR technology, and the ability to develop consumer-oriented services are suggested as key areas of expertise among high-level managers. In Study 2, empirical analysis using the S-O-R model was conducted to verify the causal relationship between VR museum content (feature) and user intention to accept it. In addition, we tested if there was any difference in causal factors that affect behavioral acceptance according to consumer technology readiness. Based on previous studies, variables at each level were selected. We conducted an experiment using HMD to collect data from a sample. Valid data were collected from 151 respondents, and empirical analysis was conducted using SPSS 21.0 and SMART PLS 3.0. As a result, most VR content featuring interactivity, vividness, and virtual reality sickness has a significant effect on user’s cognitive and affective responses. In addition, the affective responses have a strong positive effect on the user’s immersion, which in turn positively influences the intention to use content and intention to visit a museum; thus, affective responses are found to be critical in influencing user acceptance. A positive influence was observed between the intention to use content and the intention to visit a museum, confirming that the use of VR content leads to the actual museum visit. Respondents were divided into an innovative consumer group, who adopt a new technology early, and a conservative consumer group, who wait to adopt a new technology according to their technology readiness. The multiple group analysis revealed a significant difference between the two groups with respect to the causal effect of content characteristics and cognitive responses. In study 3, the economic value of VR museum content was measured using the contingent valuation method. To estimate museum admission fee and the fee that consumers intend to pay when using VR museum content, we selected the National Museum of Korea as a research subject, and a questionnaire was administered to respondents who had previously used a VR-enabled museum. Analysis results indicated that visitors were willing to pay 1,138 KRW more to use VR museum content in addition to the existing entrance fee. If museum content were created using VR, respondents would be willing to pay an additional fee of 1,200 KRW. Based on the amounts that respondents intend to pay, the utility of a VR-enabled museum is estimated, and the non-market benefits of VR museum content are estimated at about 3.7 billion KRW. This study provides the following theoretical implications. First, the approach used was novel because we analyzed the VR-enabled museum from the business ecosystem perspective. Second, we empirically verified the factors that had a causal effect on user intention to accept VR content. Third, this study presented the differences associated with tendency regarding technology readiness, which were identified in respondents who had previously used VR content. Fourth, the economic value of VR museum content was evaluated for the first time using the contingent valuation method. This study provides the following practical implications. First, to create a successful VR-enabled museum ecosystem, it is important to strengthen cooperation between value actors and to establish strategies for preoccupying the market. Second, platform-based models are strategically needed to promote VR-enabled museum ecosystems. Third, further developments in the design of VR content are essential to increase user acceptance and intention to use VR museum content. Fourth, technological features of content need to be improved continuously to attract potential consumers, defined as conservative consumers. Fifth, VR museum content should be designed in a way that strengthens the elements capable of triggering affective responses of users. Sixth, more aggressive application of VR content can be considered as a way of resolving chronic financial problems in museums. This study confirms the possibility of revitalizing the museum sector through VR convergence and suggests associated strategies based on analysis results. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute to future studies involving VR content and the VR-enabled museum ecosystem.
