This study is a field action research on para-text exploration-based picture book reading. The objective of this study was to examine the meaningful educational changes of teachers and young children in the Second Parang Class after carrying out para-text exploration activities to improve the problem of picture book reading. For this, study questions were worked out as follows: 1. ‘How is the field action research course for para-text exploration-based picture book reading composed?’ 2. ‘What is young children’s change after carrying out the field action research for para-text exploration-based picture book reading?’ 3. ‘What is teacher’s change after carrying out the field action research for para-text exploration-based picture book reading?’ Field action research was carried out with 16 5-year old children in the Second Parang Class at S Kindergarten, in G-gu, Seoul, from May to August, 2019. Data were collected through participatory observation, video recording and photographing, interviews, teacher’s reflective writing of journals, selection of appropriate picture books for para-text exploration, confirming the list of para-text components and para-text exploration elements in picture books selected, and working out plans for para-text exploration activities. Study findings are as follows: First, the field action research on para-text exploration-based picture book reading was carried out in three sessions. Regarding the interest in picture book reading and actual reading of picture books, children in the Second Parang Class presented the lack of voluntary motives. In order to improve problems, children carried out such activities as large-group picture book reading & para-text proposing, preparing para-text explorable space, small-group picture book reading, changing physical environment in the sphere of language, making para-text components-used paper bands, making picture books by inserting para-text components, reading picture books in school hours, and reading picture books with friends and teachers or alone, and then their changes were examined and assessed. After assessment, results were reflected and then children repeated the same activities, thus observing the positive changes of children and teachers. Second, after carrying out para-text exploration-based picture book reading, young children could take part in picture book reading on their own initiative, enjoy the change of picture book reading-related physical environment, find out diverse para-texts, anticipate the contents of books with the clue of para-text, and change the method of reading and enjoying picture books, thus becoming an active reader. In addition, they could explore para-texts not by teacher’s instructions but on their own initiatives. Third, after carrying out para-text exploration-based picture book reading, teachers could enhance their understanding of para-text, carry out research on the composing process of meaning of picture book reading, and help young children’s para-text exploration activities, thus playing the roles of teacher, researcher, observer and participant who were trying hard to achieve young children’s positive changes.
