This research examined non-nursing tasks and nursing cares left undone among nurses at integrated nursing care wards, and their relationship with burnout, job satisfaction, turnover intention, and medical errors in order to establish descriptive correlations between them. The conceptual framework was constructed based on a structure-process-outcome model. The structural factors included characteristics of the nurse, patient, and ward. The process factors included non-nursing tasks and nursing cares left undone, while the outcome factors included nurses’ burnout, job satisfaction, turnover intention, and medical errors. The research was conducted among 346 nurses who provided direct nursing for at least three months at 20 integrated nursing care wards of seven general hospitals between July 18 and August 30, 2019, and who consented to participate in the study. The results showed that there was more burnout among the nurses when there were insufficient staffing and resources and more non-nursing tasks and nursing cares left undone. Job satisfaction was high when there was adequate staffing and resources, and turnover intention was high when there were insufficient staffing and resources and more nursing cares left undone. The subjects reported more experience of medical errors when there were more nursing cares left undone; medical errors had a significant correlation with nursing cares left undone. Hence, the results suggest that a lack of staffing and resources for nursing influence burnout, job satisfaction, and turnover intention. Moreover, non-nursing tasks were correlated with burnout, while nursing cares left undone were correlated with burnout, turnover intention, and medical errors. The level of nurse staffing at integrated nursing care wards showed a higher number of patients per nurse than the allocation standard of a general hospital. It was also verified that the level of nurse staffing was inadequate when computed using the Korean patient classification system·severity of nursing care needs as evaluation tools. This research is significant in that it provides a reference for appropriate allocation standards of nursing staffing based on the workload by measuring non-nursing tasks and nursing cares left undone among nurses working at integrated nursing care wards of general hospitals, and verifying that they were factors related to increases in the nurses’ burnout, turnover intention, and medical errors. The results of this research can be used as basic material for improving nursing quality and patient safety for integrated nursing care services in order to establish an efficient healthcare system.
