The consonants of Korean and English are classified according to the place and manner of articulation. The Korean consonants are classified into the plain, tense and the aspirated ones depending on the presence of aspiration while the English consonants are classified into the voiced and the voiceless ones. This paper has examined the initial stops in English and Korean and has conducted an acoustic-phonetic comparative analysis on how the stops are articulated between English featuring the voiced stops and the voiceless stops and Korean featuring the absence of voiced stops. For this, the study has used the audio files intended for the listening comprehension test of both English and Korean as part of the 2011 College Scholastic Ability Test. The study has extracted the stop sounds of English and Korean, conducted quantitative comparison of their acoustic-phonetic characteristics in both languages in terms, and analyzed the collected audible data based on the waveform and spectrogram obtained through the Praat software. More specifically, the audio files have been split into segments using the acoustic analysis software Praat6.0.43 (Boersma and Weenink 1992-2018) based on which, the voice onset time (VOT), sound intensity (intensity), and the fundamental frequency(F0) have been extracted. The one-way ANOVA has also been carried out using the SPSS program to identify the presence of any significant statistical differences between them. First, the voiced bilabial stop [b] in English has shown to be significantly different from the lax bilabial sound [ㅂ] in Korean in terms of voice onset time (VOT), sound intensity, and fundamental frequency(F0), and to be significantly different from the aspirated bilabial stop [ㅍ] in Korean in terms of voice onset time (VOT) and sound intensity. However, the voiced bilabial stop [b] has shown to be similar to the aspirated bilabial stop [ㅍ] with no significant differences in terms of fundamental frequency(F0). Meanwhile, the voiceless bilabial stop [p] has shown to be significantly different from the lax bilabial sound [ㅂ] in terms of sound intensity, and fundamental frequency, and to be significantly different from the aspirated bilabial stop [ㅍ] in terms of voice onset time and sound intensity. However, the voiceless bilabial stop [p] has shown to be similar to the aspirated bilabial stop [ㅍ] with no significant differences in terms of fundamental frequency. Assuming that the VOT is the most deterministic acoustic-phonetic factor that distinguishes between voiced and voiceless as well as aspiration, the results above demonstrate that [p] in English is closer to [ㅂ] than [ㅍ]. Next, the voiced alveolar stop [d] in English has shown to be significantly different from the voiceless aspirated alveolar sound [ㅌ] in Korean in terms of voice onset time. However, the former has shown no significant difference from both the lax alveolar sound [ㄷ] and the alveolar fortis [ㄸ]. The study has found a significant difference from the lax alveolar sound [ㄷ] in terms of sound intensity but no significant difference from the aspirated alveolar sound [ㅌ] and the alveolar fortis [ㄸ]. When it comes to the fundamental frequency, a significant difference has been found from both the lax sound [ㄷ] and the fortis [ㄸ]. However, no significant difference has been found from the aspirated alveolar sound [ㅌ]. Meanwhile, the voiceless alveolar stop [t] in English has shown to be significantly different from the lax alveolar sound [ㄷ] in Korean in terms of voice onset time (VOT), sound intensity, and fundamental frequency(F0) with no significant difference at all from the aspirated sound [ㅌ] in terms of voice onset time (VOT), sound intensity, and fundamental frequency(F0). In other words, there are no acoustic-phonetic differences between the voiceless alveolar stop [t] and the aspirated alveolar sound [ㅌ] and both produce very similar pronunciation. The [t] has shown a significant difference from the Korean alveolar fortis [ㄸ] in terms of voice onset time and fundamental frequency with no significant difference in terms of sound intensity. In addition, the voiced velar stop [g] in English has shown to be significantly different from the lax stop [ㄱ] in terms of voice onset time (VOT), sound intensity, and fundamental frequency(F0) and to be significantly different from the velar fortis stop [ㅋ] in terms of voice onset time with no significant difference of sound intensity and fundamental frequency. Meanwhile, the voiceless velar stop [k] has shown to be significantly different from the lax stop [ㄱ] in terms of voice onset time and sound intensity with no significant difference in terms of fundamental frequency. It has also shown to be significantly different from the velar fortis stop [ㅋ] in terms of voice onset time with no significant difference in terms of sound intensity and fundamental frequency. What is intriguing is that, when it comes to the place of articulation (bilabial, alveolar and velar) and the manner of articulation (voiced and voiceless), [b] and [p], [p] and [d], and [g] and [k] have shown a difference in terms of VOT but no different in terms of sound Intensity, F0, which indicates that the VOT determines phoneme discrimination. Admittedly, Korean speakers may pronounce the voiceless stops in English as the aspirated sounds in Korean, and voiced stops in English as tense in Korean, and may not able to accurately distinguish between the voiced and voiceless sounds of stops in English. However, the voiced stops are acoustic-phonetically distinguished from the voiceless stops, raising a need for learning the pronunciation of consonants with emphasis on differentiating their phonetic sounds.
