The purpose of this study was, in collaboration between researchers and teachers, to repeat the plan-execution-reflection for effective free play time management, and to present the change process and effect. In addition, this study attempted to clarify the significance of the study focusing on the changes of teachers and infants in the cooperative practice research on free play time management. Research problems were set as below following the study purpose.
Question 1. What is the process of collaborative action research on the management of free play time in Infant classrooms? 1-1. What is the process of planning for a change in collaborative action research on the management of free play time in Infant classrooms? 1-2. What is the process of creation for a change in collaborative action research on the management of free play time in infant classrooms? Question 2. What is the meaning of collaborative action research on the management of free play time in Infant classrooms? 2-1. What is the change of teachers through the collaborative action research process? 2-2. What is the change of infants through the collaborative action research process?
This study was conducted with the participation of the teacher and infants who are 2 years old in green classroom at the Rainbow Daycare Center in D City. This study, which was conducted as a collaborative action study between teachers and researchers on the management of free play time in early childhood classrooms, with a study preparation process was underway to plan change from February 11, 2019 to April 15, 2019, and a core research process was created from April 18, 2019 to September 13, 2019. This research data was collected by various ways, including observation, photography and video recording, interviews and consultations, recording and communication using SNS, journal writing by teachers and researchers, plans and infant development evaluation reports. The collected data were analyzed through data integration, area analysis, data categorization, detailed category analysis and interpretation. The results of the analysis are summarized according to the research questions as follows. First, in the collaborative action research on the operation of free play time in the infant class, the research topic was discussed and the site analysis work was performed on the basis of the formation of intimacy between researchers and participating teachers. Researchers and teachers explored related literature together, focusing on the needs of the field, and planned six operational measures to efficiently operate free play time. The contents of the six operating methods were to construct an environment that stimulates play interest, provide an environment that induces play immersion, make it an infant-led play time, guide-connect-arrangement play naturally, operating it an integrated way, the teachers' play guidance and interactive skills were considers. Each operation plan repeated the process of plan-execution-reflection as a method of collaborative action research between teachers and researchers, presenting specific methods and meanings of practical application. Second, through the collaborative action research process on the free play time management of infants and toddlers, the changes of teachers and infants were found. Teachers have deepened their understanding of early childhood and play and changed their knowledge and beliefs. In addition, in the course of research, the teacher's own problems were dealt with directly, and the skills and wisdom of problem solving were developed, and the attitude of observing and reflecting was formed. Teachers developed knowledge, skills, and attitudes as competent teachers for free ply time management, and enjoyed and rewarded as teachers. In addition to these teacher changes, infants who participated in the research process experienced the importance of play, gained developmental change effects, and developed important self-direction for their life and play. These findings raise the need to reflect on the quality of the operation of free play time in the infant class. The experience of changing the play environment, improving the quality of teachers, and the developmental change of infants has made me realize that the free play time has been operated without many possibilities. Infants clearly had different needs than infants and were able to lead their own development through infant response and search. In order for free play time in the infant class to be operated as a meaningful time to experience real play, research needs to be more active, enabling the formation of in-depth understanding and practical knowledge of the specific role of the infant and the play and teacher. In addition, these findings should be presented in various ways to support teachers at child care sites that determine the quality of free play time operations.
