The purpose of this study was to find out the experiences of male early childhood teachers who are working for more than five years before and during working in the early childhood education institutions, and how they overcame those difficulties. The results of the study are expected to provide basic information such as know-how for long time working to junior male teachers, male students majoring in early childhood education, and male directors running kindergartens, by analyzing the difficulties and how to overcome them.
In order to achieve the research purposes, the following research questions were set.
1. What difficulties did the male early childhood teachers working for more than five years have?
2. How did the male early childhood teachers working for more than five years overcome the difficulties?
At the end, the advice of the male early childhood teachers working for more than five years were added for junior male teachers.
In this study, the nine male early childhood teachers participated in this study, holding a kindergarten teacher's license or a child care teacher's license and working for more than five years in the early childhood educational institutions(private kindergarten, national/public nursery, workplace nursery, home nusery, etc.) 24 week in-depth interviews were conducted in order to find out the experiences of the participants from before the employment until now in the early childhood institutions. Each participant had 2 times interviews and in total 18 interviews were conducted. If further information was needed, a telephone interview and a KakaoTalk conversation were accomplished.
The difficulties faced by the male early childhood teachers in early childhood educational institutions are as follows. They had a lot of difficulties from the period of college life before becoming a male early childhood teacher. The first was the relationship with peer students after admission. They talked about what experiences they had with the majority of female peers. The second was the relationship with seniors. When they entered the school, it was difficult for them to be focused as male students and to place too much importance on the relationship between seniors and juniors. The third was the life after returning to colleges from the military service. When returning to college after the military service, they had to study with excessively more female junior students than male.
The last was the difficulty in finding out a kindergarten for field practice and employment. The institutions rejected taking the male students for practice and rejected them for employing just because they are male. The rejection was a big pain for the participants.
There were many difficulties after employment. The first was the relationship with children. First of all, it was difficult to approach sexuality, and there was a difference between the way of dealing with a boy and a girl, and it was more difficult when dealing with a girl.
The second was the relationship with fellow teachers. Not all people have this personality, but unlike men, women's psychology is complicated and many things are entangled, so they should be careful in their actions and conversation.
The third was the relationship with the chief directors. According to the Korea Educational Development Institute's Educational Statistics Service (2019), the total number of directors is 4,101, and the number of female directors is 3,838, which is excessively more than the male directors. Since most of the institutions have female directors, the male teachers almost are always employed by the female director's institutions and have a vertical relationship. There is much difference when female directors approach to female teacher and male teachers. The male teachers felt difficult to deal with the directors but felt more difficult with the female directors.
The fourth was the relationship with parents. There was a call from parents asking to change class, and it seemed that they did not like teachers because they were male.
The fifth was to be compared with acquaintances. When comparing with other people's position and salaries in the social life, the study participants naturally had a chance to think about their jobs with less salaries and positions.
The sixth was their identity because of the way in which the people dealt with them as if they were teachers or had an all-round capability. They were required to do many things, not for teachers. They felt difficult with their own emotions. Because there is not definite standard in the field of early childhood education, it was difficult to set a standard and they were not satisfied with themselves after working.
The seventh was no man to communicate about the problems that they faced. Since there were few male teachers, it was difficult for them to have a chance to talk in depth about the problems they faced as a male teacher.
Lastly, they felt more burden with human relationship after being employed in the early childhood institution, more responsibility for children as a class teacher, with the relationship with parents etc. which is also true for female teachers. Before being employed by the early childhood education institution, they just had to play with children because they were not class teachers. So they felt much difference before and after employment.
There were some ways to overcome the difficulties faced by male early childhood teachers in early childhood educational institutions.
First, in the relation to children, it was good to express their loving mind differently between male and female infants although they loved both male and female infants equally. When a conflict situation occurred, they tried to understand different characteristics of male infants and female infants. If they had any questions, they asked to other female teachers to understand how to resolve the conflicts with female infants.
Second, they overcame the difficulties by thinking positively. To live as a male early childhood teacher, it is necessary to practice positive thinking whatever happens.
Third, they overcame the difficulties of relationships. They tried to use various methods to build and maintain relationships with infants, parents, and peers.
