Factors Affecting Career Identity of Youth in Community Children Center: Based on Super's theory of career development원문보기

Based on Super (1957)’s career development theory, this study aims to identify the effects of personal and environmental factors, and characteristics of community children center on youth’s career identity. Whereas career identity is an important developmental task in adolescence, youth in poor or low-income families have difficulty in building career identity due to their environments. Although Super (1957)’s career development theory suggested the specific tasks in each developmental stage and emphasized on the importance of career identity, it were seldom applied into youth in poor or low-income families. On the other hand, community children centers, which major users are youth in poor or low-income families, provide different career-related programs depending on organizations and areas. Therefore, this study identified the factors influencing youth’s career identity by using panel data (5th) of the community children center (N=342). The dependent variable is the career identity of youth in community children centers. Based on Super (1957)’s theory, the independent variables are comprised of personal factors (i.e., gender, academic performance, learning habits, and ego-resilience) and environmental factors (i.e., family type, family economic level, neglect, and peer attachment, school adaptation, and satisfaction of neighborhood). As additional independent variable, the characteristics of community children centers are considered such as satisfaction of teacher and facility and evaluation of programs. The basic relationships between variables were analyzed by using descriptive analysis. Then, the multiple regression analysis was conducted to identify the influences of personal and environmental factors and characteristics of the community children center on youth’s career identity. Ego-resilience, which was one of personal factors, influenced youth’s career identity. Among environmental factors, the level of family economy, parenting style, and school adaptation were related with youth’s career identity. Finally, the characteristics of community children center such as overall satisfaction and evaluation of programs (i.e., self-development and experience) influenced youth’s career identity. Based on these findings, this study suggests implications on youth’s career identity and community children centers. First of all, the programs which improve youth’s ego-resilience should be more developed in community children centers. In addition, more active interventions, such as career counseling, should be provided to youth in low-income family. More efforts such as (1) parent education and counseling to prevent from child abuse and neglect and (2) group activities to improve social relationships at school should be implemented in cooperation among community children centers, schools, and community in order to help youth build appropriate career identity. In addition, community children centers should try to increase youth’s overall satisfaction and ameliorate programs related career development. Because of research design and data, this study contains three major limitations. First of all, although this study targeted on youth in poor or low-income families, it did not include more marginalized youth such as youth out of school or community. Second, this study considered characteristic of community children centers. However this study did not measure the quantity and quality of programs, it has a limitation to test an accurate causal relationship between youth’s evaluation on program and their career identity. Finally, the analytical model of this study which used panel data was not completely consistent with Super (1957)’s career development theory.
