This study explored the history of Korean hymn books focusing on early hymns in Korean Church. Before the American missionaries came to China, Chinese hymns came in Korean worship by Methodists and Yun Chi-ho. However, the process and contents of the hymns of the Presbyterian hymns were through the missionary called Horace Underwood who had come to Korea 1885. The reason for the compilation of hymns in the early days of missionary work was the rapid growth of church members as a result of active missionary activities. The Methodist Hymnal, compiled in 1892, is the first hymnal in Korean hymnal history, and Underwood’s Presbyterian hymnal, compiled in 1894, is Korea's first sheet music.
The composition, process and contents of the Presbyterian hymns and the Baptist hymns Gospel songs were directly used for Korean worship service. The hymn book containing 151 hymns shaped the main form of later hymn books and took a prominent position in the history of Korean hymns. This is called in one hand ‘missionary hymns.’ 142 among the 151 hymns were housed in Chanchonga published in 1908. In addition, The Gospel song from Baptist background has a weaker composition than the hymns of other denominations, but this songbook had clear hymns based on the theology of the Bible, God, and Christ, and contributed much to the inculturation of Protestantism. And in 1908, the Missionary Union Council published Chanchona, the first united hymnal hymn compiled by the Chancellor's Hymnal. Sinjeong Chansong (1931) is a hymnbook published as a public worship service rather than private spiritual meetings.
The Methodist Church decided to use the Sinjeongchanchonga instead of Chanchonga (1908), but the Presbyterians continued to use the Chanchonga (1908) instead of using the Shinchonchanchonga (1908) due to theological conflicts between them. In this year, the Methodist published The New hymnbook called Changsong-ga. After the National Liberation from Japanese rule of 1945, the Korean Church unified into one Bible and one hymnbook. The desire to achieve the unity of the Gospel spirit caused to publish the Joint Hymnbook (1949) as a result of cooperation of church ministry among the denomination of Presbyterians, Methodists, and Holiness.
