Recently, VR content market is rapidly growing due to the supply expansion of VR devices such as head-mounted display (HMD), whereas VR sickness (occurring while VR experience) still remains an unsolved problem. These motion sickness symptoms that have recently been called VR sickness restrict watching VR content. In order to overcome this problem, various studies on reducing VR sickness are being conducted. Most of conventional studies to reduce VR sickness have been variously focused on hardware and content. Hardware-based reduction method is the one to reduce the VR sickness by controlling rendering latency, resolution, and field-of-view. This method has the restriction that is difficult to popularize because it uses a hardware device to reduce VR sickness or a device specialized for VR content. The VR sickness reduction method focused on content controls the background complexity, speed of movement, and speed of rotation, which is the cause of VR sickness for content. The most well-known VR sickness reduction method focused on content uses a reference frame as one method for controlling background complexity. The reference frame is a standard that helps the user recognize their space as the user's current position, direction, and movement in the virtual environment. However, VR sickness may occur when no reference frame exists or several reference frames move in each direction. Conventional research has proposed the VR sickness reduction method of using an independent visual background (IVB) that is not affected by moving the viewpoint. However, as IVB widely exists in background content, there is the limitation that is difficult to apply. In this paper, we study the effects of VR sickness with respect to various visual guides (VGs) to overcome the above-mentioned restrictions. The proposed method proposes a user with a visual guide as a visual standard for focusing their eyes, which can reduce VR sickness by lowering the user's perception of the parameters in the content which is one of the causes of VR sickness. The proposed method is examined by comparing the VR sickness (score) after viewing VR content with and without the visual guide.
