The purpose of this study is to understand the concept of interest intrinsically and to reveal concrete practical meanings of how interest arises, functions, and develops in an actual educational situation based on the educational principles of interest revealed theoretically. Teachers study the importance of interest in the growth of elementary school children from the time of pre-service teacher. Everyone is aware that interest is an essential element of successful instruction and plays an important role in the meaningful completion of instruction. However, in real classroom situations, it is not easy to induce children of various inclinations to participate in classes with interest. In addition, it is a very difficult task for teachers to maintain it and lead it to a meaningful learning path even if it has succeeded in generating interest to some extent. When we look at the phenomenon of interest that appears in a variety of classroom situations, we realize that there are limitations to our conventional beliefs such as “motivating learning, having fun, and ways to achieve learning goals”. If so, what is interest and what practical meaning and value does it have in an educational context? To answer these questions, this study clarifies the conceptual meaning of interest and explores its educational principles, focusing on the educational philosophy of John Dewey, who deals with interest in importance. To this end, the interest-related parts of 『Interest and Effort in Education』, 『Experience and Education』, and 『Democracy and Education』 are limited to the scope of literature analysis. In addition, based on Dewey's principle of interest, we will find out in detail what situations and conditions of interest appear and change in the actual educational field through examples of related activities of researchers gathered from March 2019 to June 2020. Chapter II explores the conceptual meaning of interest based on Dewey's educational philosophy. First, through Dewey's criticism of the existing viewpoints of interest, we examine the differences between the views that contrast with the so-called traditional Toya theory and romantic interest theory and the Dewey viewpoint. Then, as a characteristic of Dewey's theory of interest, the concept is summarized and clarified by focusing on motivation as a condition for forming interest, purpose and means in educational activities, and meaning of difficulties and efforts. According to Dewey, interest appears as the force that drives the person in an active situation, and direct interest in purpose gradually shifts to indirect interest in elements that serve as a means of accomplishment as the mind accompanies it. It is accompanied by effort. These three meanings work in unison with each other, revealing the characteristic nature of the concept of interest that Dewey highlights educationally. Chapter Ⅲ explores the educational principles of interest for the growth of children based on newly understood concepts of interest. Dewey believed that children should be familiar with the developmental characteristics to educate them to grow intellectually and emotionally, and based on the new psychological understanding of the day, the characteristics of students' development of interest were physically active, instrumental, and operationally interesting. It was divided into intellectual exploration and scientific interest stages. In addition, it suggests social interest as another thing that grows in the course of students developing more sophisticated interests by sequentially following these three steps. Interest is divided into features that can be developed in each stage, but these interests are not strictly classified, but overlap each other and develop continuously. In addition to the general understanding of children's interest development, it is also important to understand the process of development of interest in specific situations in organizing educational activities. To this end, the principles of ‘direct interest’ and ‘indirect interest’ are dealt with, ie, the principle of ‘transfer’, in which these two interests develop continuously and their personality changes. As they complete a series of unit experiences in which direct interest is transferred to indirect interest, and indirect interest is transferred to direct interest, students themselves develop their interests toward the world of learning and take steps toward new exploration. In chapter Ⅳ, based on the theoretically stated educational principles of interest, the case of interest-related phenomena in the actual classroom is analyzed to explore how interest occurs, functions, and develops in the educational field. The conclusions that can be drawn as a result are as follows. First, even students who are not interested in learning can open up motivation for participation and gradual growth potential by using activities suitable for the development stage of physical activity and instrument manipulation at first, and can ultimately suggest a way forward. Second, teachers should be able to flexibly reorganize and utilize textbooks or curriculum while reading the needs and interests of students in concrete classroom situations. Only when the educational activities can be organized in consideration of the needs and interests of the students' development can truly lead to the development of interest in a real sense. Third, proper difficulties that students can overcome through their own efforts can serve as a medium to make a significant difference. Lastly, it is necessary to find a link between the direct and indirect interests of the student and develop interest in education meaningfully. Accumulation of continuous experience is very important to ensure that direct interest, which is well expressed for some time in the first place, continues to act on students and opens up a new path of interest development. To sum up, the concept of interest goes beyond the daily notion that it is regarded as instantaneous fun, and requires an educational understanding for the intellectual and emotional growth of the child. In addition, as a result of analyzing the phenomenon of interest through the concrete classroom situation in elementary school, it can be seen that interest persists when there are problems and difficulties that arise in an active situation that meets the developmental characteristics of students and stimulate thought and effort. As a result, it is possible to attempt to reveal the conditions necessary for the development of students' interest. Finally, conditions such as the curriculum, formalized evaluation, and textbooks that are presented in an inappropriate state for the provision of continuous unit experiences remain a problem that makes it difficult for teachers and students to develop educational experiences and interests.
