The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a self-report measure of metacognition, the Metacognition Scale. Metacognition refers to conscious awareness, monitoring, and control about cognitive processes. In study 1, preliminary items were developed to measure three sub-components of metacognition: meta-awareness, monitoring, and meta-control. First, to evaluate content validity, eleven experts assessed whether each item appropriately represented the construct. Based on the experts’ ratings and comments, items were revised, deleted, or added. Using an online survey, 488 community adults completed the revised measure. Exploratory factor analysis resulted in three factors of meta-awareness (8 items), monitoring (4 items), and meta-control (8 items). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the three factor structure. In study 2, using an independent community adult sample, the Metacognition Scale, a 28-item self-report measure of metacognition, had adequate internal consistency and test-retest reliability. The Metacognition Scale also had good convergent and criterion validity. This scale had significant negative correlations with pathological personality traits, psychotic tendencies, and depression. Also, significant group differences were found in the above psychopathology between the high and low metacogtion groups. In particular, disinhibition had a large difference depending on the level of metacognition. In conclusion, the Metacognition Scale developed in this study is a valid measure of metacognition in community adults.
