The effects of small group reading discussion centered on metacognitive strategy on reading ability and reading motivation
The purpose of this study is to investigate whether reading discussion based on meta-cognitive strategy affects the reading ability of small group of 10th grade in elementary school students. In particular, I focused on analyzing how reading ability and reading motivation are changed through reading patterns and reading patterns in reading discussion dialogue during small group reading discussion. The purpose of this study is to explain the concept of metacognition strategy as a factor to change the process of cognition and to improve the reading ability by metacognition strategy and the reading ability to promote cognitive activation by reading discussion. Based on the premise that the meaning is composed, I explained the concept and variables of reading ability. In order to clarify the reading ability of elementary school students, we investigated the study of reading instructional instruction for elementary school students' reading motivation, developmental characteristics and reading level. In addition, we examined the types and effects of reading discussions, which are considered to be the core of interactive teaching and learning as a social construct. This study is an integrated model study that analyzes the reading ability of elementary school students quantitatively and qualitatively based on the collected 12-week reading discussion conversation data. The subjects of this study consisted of 10 experimental group and 6th grade students in elementary school. For the experimental group, 5 students were experimented with small group reading teaching - learning activities using meta - cognitive strategy and 5 groups were applied reading activities without reading discussion teaching - learning instruction. 4 books of literary texts and 1 volume of information texts were selected. After reading the book every week, the researchers participated in a small group reading discussion class focused on meta - cognitive strategy. The test tools used in this study were word - word recognition ability, background knowledge diagnosis, reading ability, and reading ability test using 'Daesung Reading Diagnosis', a non - formal diagnostic tool. The reading motivation test was developed by Wigfield & Guthrie (1997). The motivation for reading questionnaire (MRQ) was composed of four motivational reading motives among 11 motives of reading motivation. The questionnaire was deleted and 20 items were reconstructed. A variety of materials were collected and analyzed to verify the students' reading ability.
In order to accomplish this purpose, the research problems set up are as follows. 1. Does the small group reading discussion centered on meta-cognitive strategy affect the reading motivation of elementary school students? 2. Does small-group reading discussion centered on meta-cognitive strategy affect elementary students' reading ability?
In order to accomplish the above tasks, 5 students in the 6th grade who attended more than 2 years in the reading class led by the researcher in Bucheon city were selected as the experimental group and 5 students in the 6th grade , And a reading discussion program was conducted 10 times for 4 months, 5 books for 2 times. In the first and 12th grade, 12 literacy tests were conducted because of reading ability and pre - and post - test of reading motivation. In the reading class, the experimental group taught teaching - learning through a small group reading discussion centered on the metacognition strategy, and the comparative group tried to verify the effectiveness of the reading discussion activity by carrying out an experimental treatment to read only books without teaching - learning instruction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the significance of reading ability and metacognition and reading ability, and to explore the possibility of the elementary school students' reaction to reading ability and reading motivation.
The results of the study are as follows. First, reading activity is related to metacognition because the influence of students' metacognitive strategies on the characteristics and reading ability of small group reading and discussion teaching - learning process are significant. Second, small group reading discussion focused on students 'meta-cognitive strategies influenced elementary school students' reading ability by identifying the characteristics of reading ability process and the focus of their reading ability. Third, small group reading discussion through meta - cognitive strategy did not have statistically significant difference in reading motivation between two groups, but it was confirmed that it had a significant influence through qualitative analysis. Fourth, small group reading discussion instruction centered on meta - cognitive strategy could be more effective than reading ability as teaching - learning materials.
