Metacognition is defined as the ability which discriminates what we know and what we don’t know. Metacognitive ability is known to be improved through perceptual learning, similar to perceptual ability. However, it is unclear whether the improvement in metacognitive ability for specific elements through perceptual learning transfers to other elements such as other locations or quadrants. A previous study confirmed that the improvement in subjective awareness ability for one quadrant through perceptual learning transfers to another quadrant, but did not control perceptual accuracy, which typically affects the measurement of metacognitive ability. Here, controlling perceptual accuracy, this study investigated whether metacognitive ability improved through quadrant-specific perceptual learning and, if metacognitive ability improved, its improvement transferred to other quadrants. During training sessions, participants carried out a consecutive five-day task of identifying the shape and judging confidence of the target shape presented only in one quadrant of visual field. To verify the transfer effect, the performance of training quadrants and non-training quadrants was compared during test sessions. By applying the staircase procedure, perceptual accuracy was kept constant. The sensitivities of shape-identifying response and confidence response, and the ratio of these sensitivities was measured based on signal detection theory. As a result of two experiments and two-stage model simulations, sensory noise and metacognitive noise for training quadrants were reduced through perceptual learning, but not for non-training quadrants. In other words, perceptual and metacognitive ability for training quadrants improved through perceptual learning, while the improvement of these abilities did not transfer to non-training quadrants. These results suggest that the reduction in sensory and metacognitive noise as presented in this study shows quadrant-specific characteristic and occurs in V4 or earlier stages during visual processing.
