This study aims to promote successful and meaningful intercultural communication between KFL teachers and learners by presenting measures for the enhancement of intercultural sensitivity and effective conflict management through various approaches to intercultural sensitivity and classroom conflict management of KFL teachers. For this purpose, this study takes two methodological approaches. First, a survey of 209 KFL teachers was conducted to measure their intercultural sensitivity and conflict management style. Based on the results of the survey, this study investigated not only the relationship between intercultural sensitivity and conflict management styles, but also the factors that affect the two concepts. Second, this study conducted interviews with 10 KFL teachers to explore their intercultural sensitivity in terms of values, attitudes and emotions, as well as to examine how KFL teachers specifically manage classroom conflicts. In addition, resources available in Korean language education field for intercultural sensitivity and effective conflict management were explored. The survey results can be summarized as follows. First, the intercultural sensitivity of KFL teachers was appeared to be high as 4.10 out of 5. In the sub-areas of intercultural sensitivity, ‘Interaction enjoyment’was highest, followed by ‘Respect for cultural differences’, ‘Interaction engagement’, ‘Interaction attentiveness’, and ‘Interaction confidence’. Second, there is no statistically significant difference in intercultural sensitivity between groups according to teaching experience, while there are statistically significant differences in intercultural sensitivity between groups according to experience of taking intercultural communication lectures, experience of staying abroad, and foreign language ability. Third, it is found that the background variable of KFL teachers that has the greatest influence on intercultural sensitivity is foreign language ability. In the sub-areas, the factors with the greatest influence on ‘Interaction confidence’ are experience of taking intercultural communication lectures, experience of staying abroad, and foreign language ability. And the factors with the greatest influence on ‘Interaction attentiveness’ are foreign language ability and experience of taking intercultural communication lectures. Fourth, the analysis of the conflict management styles of KFL teachers shows that ‘Integrating’ is the highest, followed by ‘Compromising’, ‘Obliging’, ‘Avoiding’ and ‘Dominating’. Fifth, intercultural sensitivity has statistically significant positive correlation with ‘Integrating’, ‘Compromising’, ‘Obliging’ and negative correlation with ‘Avoiding’ and ‘Dominating’. The results suggest that the more interculturally sensitive teachers are, the more likely they are to use integrating, compromising and obliging styles to manage conflicts with learners, and the less likely that they are to use avoiding and dominating styles. Sixth, by examining the impact of intercultural sensitivity on conflict management styles, it is found that ‘Interaction engagement’, ‘Interaction confidence’ and ‘Interaction enjoyment’ have both explanatory and predictive power in ‘Integrating’ style. It is also verified that ‘Interaction engagement’ has the greatest impact on ‘Obliging’ and ‘Respect for cultural differences’ on ‘Dominating’. In addition,‘Interaction enjoyment’ is the biggest influence on ‘Avoiding’ and ‘Interaction engagement’ on ‘Compromising’. Therefore, it can be concluded that the intercultural sensitivity of KFL teachers has a statistically significant effect on their conflict management style. Next, the results of the interview with KFL teachers are as follows. First, the five characteristics of KFL teachers’ intercultural sensitivity were explored: ‘Interest and Curiosity about other cultures’, ‘Positive awareness of differences’, ‘Open-mindedness and Flexibility’, ‘Active learning attitude toward other cultures’ and ‘Empathy. These five characteristics work harmoniously and interact with each other to achieve the intercultural sensitivity that enables them to recognize, accept, and respect cultural differences positively. Second, the results of exploring how KFL teachers specifically manage conflicts through each case of ‘Education general conflict’, ‘Conflict due to communication skills’, ‘Conflict due to differences in values’ and ‘Conflict due to exclusive cultural identity’ are as follows. First, regarding ‘Education general conflict’, KFL teachers dealt with conflicts caused by lack of learners’ motivation to learn by using the dominating style or by playing various roles as a second language teacher, including advising, admonishing, persuading, and mediating conflicts between learners. In conflicts due to differences in proficiency among learners, KFL teachers not only acted as an invisible mediator or buffer, but also dealt with conflicts in integrating style of actively seeking and attempting various ways to avoid conflicts between learners. Conflicts caused by differences in expectations of classroom interactions were approached in integrating style of seeking solutions through open conversation with learners. And conflicts due to differences in expectations of teaching and learning styles were dealt with by means of compromising, avoiding or advising depending on the situation. Second, regarding ‘Conflicts caused by communication skills’, KFL teachers perceived conflicts caused by differences in nonverbal expressions as more substantial than those caused by language differences. KFL teachers who are aware of the norms for nonverbal expressions of learners’ culture in advance, was able to avoid greater misunderstandings and conflicts by correcting their inappropriate behavior. And avoiding conflict due to nonverbal expressions was likely to cause misunderstanding between teachers and learners. Third, regarding ‘Conflicts due to differences in values’, KFL teachers responded as follows. KFL teachers dealt with conflicts due to face concepts in integrating style. And conflicts with learners requiring teachers to have greater authority have been dealt with in obliging style. Conflicts caused by differences in social status between men and women were not avoided, but rather dealt with by advising learners of appropriateness in the cultural context. Fourth, ‘Conflicts due to exclusive cultural identity’ were addressed as follows: KFL teachers served as a buffer in conflicts between learners due to stereotypes and prejudices, and conflicts between learners due to racism were actively mediated. In conflicts between learners due to ethnocentrism, KFL teachers evoked topics and mediated them with minimal intervention so as not to deviate from the original purpose of the class. Fifth, regarding ‘Conflicts caused by national relations’, most KFL teachers tried to prevent conflicts in advance by avoiding potential elements of the conflict. And KFL teachers flexibly dealt with the possible conflicts among learners by calling attention to class topics, mediating with minimal intervention, or expressing individual opinions depending on the circumstances. It is derived from the field cases that KFL teachers have been flexibly coping with conflicts by performing various roles as second language teachers rather than acting on the five absolute classifications of ‘Integrating’, ‘Obliging’, ‘Dominating’, ‘Avoiding’ and ‘Compromising’. It is also verified that besides behavioral efforts to resolve conflicts, intercultural awareness, patience and respect for the differences, self-monitoring, critical cultural awareness, and respect for various cultural perspectives and interpretations are needed. Lastly, for intercultural sensitivity and conflict management of KFL teachers, ‘Building relationships with learners’, ‘Communication with fellow teachers’, ‘Building learning communities’, ‘Counselling’, and ‘Teacher education’ were explored as resources available in Korean language education field. And based on the results of the study, an education program for the enhancement of intercultural sensitivity and effective conflict management of KFL teachers was proposed. This study purses a comprehensive understanding of KFL teachers’ intercul tural sensitivity by not only measuring their intercultural sensitivity, but also by exploring it in terms of inner values, attitudes and emotional aspects. It is the first study to investigate how KFL teachers manage conflicts which are unavoidable in intercultural communication situations. It also provides a useful perspective on the various aspects of conflicts that may arise in the Korean language classroom. The education program for the enhancement of intercultural sensitivity and effective conflict management presented in this study can be used as a basic for future institutionalized teacher education.
