The present study is a randomized controlled retrospective study designed to investigate the effects of Healing Beat (HB) a stress relieving system that uses sound sources linked with heart rate, to help maintain normal levels of anxiety, autonomic nerve activity, BIS I ndex (B ispectral Index), blood pressure, and heart rate in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. In this study, the relevant materials were collected from December 20, 2019, to February 20, 2020. A total of 61 patients diagnosed with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy in the outpatient department or inpatient ward of the K university hospital located in the D city were randomly assigned to experiment ( n =31) and control n =30) groups, respectively. The subjects of the experiment group listened to HB with beats per minute (bpm) identical to their heart rates during chemotherapy, and those of the control group did not receive any treatment. The co llected data were analyzed using SPSS Statistics 20.0. As a result, the subjects of the experiment group who listened to HB showed significantly lowered anxiety ( p <.001), physiological stress ( p =.002), and subjective stress p =.004), as well as markedly s table BIS ( p =.012) and heart rate p <.001), compared to those of the control group. However, there were no significant differences in autonomic nerve activity and blood pressure between the two groups. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that HB is effective in decreasing the anxiety and stress of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and in stabilizing their BIS and heart rate. In addition, HB can be used by simply downloading applications on mobile phones, which presents efficiency in terms of ti me and effort, given that it can be used without the need for assistance. Therefore, it is expected that HB, whose psychological and physiological effects have been verified through objective indicators, can be used as an effective nursing intervention for managing the symptoms of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at a variety of clinical settings.
