This descriptive survey study investigated the factors that affect the post-traumatic growth of nurses who provide nursing care for patients with COVID-19. The investigation aided in attempts at providing basic data for the development of intervention programs or policies aimed at promoting nurses’ post-traumatic growth. The subjects of this study were nurses working at B medical center (designated medical institution for COVID-19, located in B Metropolitan City) who had experience in providing direct nursing care for patients with COVID-19. Nurses were selected via convenience sampling. A self-reported questionnaire survey was administered to 197 nurses who voluntarily consented to participate in this study after being informed of its purpose and methodology. Data were collected between November 4, 2020 and November 11, 2020, and were expressed in terms of frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviations, using SPSS 25.0. The independent t-test and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the differences in post-traumatic growth according to general characteristics, followed by the Scheffé post-hoc test. Pearson’s correlation coefficients were used to examine the correlations between different variables, and a hierarchical regression analysis was used to investigate the factors affecting post-traumatic growth.
The following results were obtained:
1. In the social support domain, the mean scores for family support and peer support were 107.98±14.35 and 94.13±16.38 out of 125, respectively. The mean score was 39.26±6.46 out of 54 for calling, 18.69±5.84 out of 30 for deliberate rumination, and 46.54±14.19 out of 80 for post-traumatic growth. 2. Statistically significant differences in post-traumatic growth were found according to age(F=7.81, p=.001), marital status(t=-2.66, p=.009), religion(t=-3.12, p=.002), clinical experience(F=6.72, p<.001), job position(t=-3.19, p=.002), and willingness to provide nursing care for patients with novel infections(t=4.20, p<.001). 3. Post-traumatic growth was significantly and positively correlated with family support(r=.18, p=.013), peer support(r=.39, p<.001), calling(r=.53, p<.001), and deliberate rumination(r=.68, p<.001). 4. Deliberate rumination(β=.51, p<.001), calling(β=.20, p=.001), and religion(β=.11, p=.023) were found to affect the post-traumatic growth of the subjects. These variables explained for 55.7% of the variances in post-traumatic growth. Religion, calling, and deliberate rumination were found to affect the post-traumatic growth of nurses who provide nursing care for patients with COVID-19. Of these, deliberate rumination had the highest impact on post-traumatic growth. These results demonstrate the need to develop intervention programs and policies to increase calling and deliberate rumination among nurses providing nursing care for patients with novel infections, thereby promoting their post-traumatic growth.
