This descriptive correlation study aimed to investigate the levels of job stress and fatigue in nurses who provided care for patients with COVID-19 and identify the effects of job stress and fatigue on burnout in nurses. This study was conducted from October 15 to November 1, 2020. The subjects were nurses working at four infectious disease-specialized medical centers in Chungcheongnam-do Province. The data were collected using a survey inquiring the general characteristics of the subjects and the measurement tools for job stress, fatigue, and burnout. A total of 146 surveys were used for the analysis, and the collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and multiple linear regression using SPSS ver. 24.
The study results are as follows. 1. The average levels of job stress, fatigue, and burnout of nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 at infection specialized hospitals were 3.46, 3.09, and 3.05, respectively.
2. The job stress in nurses with respect to their general characteristics had a statistically significant difference according to working hours (F= 8.072, p< 0.001).
3. The fatigue in nurses with respect to their general characteristics had a statistically significant difference according to gender (t=2.055, p=0.042) and career (F=2.457, p=0.048).
4. The burnout in nurses with respect to their general characteristics had a statistically significant difference according to age (F=4.297, p=0.006) and martial status (t=2.668, p=0.009).
5. A significantly positive correlation was found between job stress and fatigue (r=0.487, p<0.001), between job stress and burnout (r=0.322, p< 0.001), and between fatigue and burnout (r=0.492, p<0.001).
6. The factors influencing the burnout among nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 at infection specialized hospitals were age (β=-0.273), job stress (β=0.078), and fatigue (β=0.500), with the explanatory power of 32.3%.
These results confirmed that there is a significant correlation between job stress, fatigue, and burnout in nurses caring for patients with COVID-19 at infection specialized hospitals. Therefore, it is recommended implementing proactive interventions to reduce the level of job stress and prevent the burnout in nurses caring for patients with an infectious disease. Keywords: emerging infectious disease, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), nurses in infectious disease-specialized hospital, job stress, fatigue, burnout
