Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs) are a non-biodegradable material being used in a variety of fields around the world. Carbon and fluorine, through a strong covalent bond, do not decompose easily, and having characteristics of being strong against heat and being chemically stable, they are found throughout the environment. They are toxic to the human body and can induce disruption of the endocrine system, cause blood clots, pregnancy disorders, fetal growth defects, and affect the immune system, recently PFCs were detected in tap water from the Nakdong river water system in Korea, attracting much interest domestically. In my research i used semiconductors to analyze the PFCs occurrence in waste water, making artificial water to detect the concentration i performed an experiment using photocatalyst decomposition to increase the decomposition efficiency of the PFCs. Using the TiO2 that is most used in photo catalysis, with readily available TiO2 and TiO2 manufactured through the sol-gel method in order to increase the decomposition rate and reduce the band gap TiO2, graphene oxide was added to create GO-TiO2. The properties of the two catalysts were compared using BET, XPS, SEM-EDX and UV-DRS. The specific surface area of the TiO2 and GO-TiO2 was 7.5704 m2/g, 26.1814 m2/g and through XPS analysis the state of the elemental bonds were analyzed. I used EDX analysis to check for the presence of carbon from GO-TiO2 Using the UV-DRS results, according to the band gap energy analysis, 3.14 eV of TiO2, 2.72 eV of GO-TiO2, showing a reduction. The perfluorinated compound was analyzed using LC/MS/MS. Within the semiconductor wastewater, of the PFCs in the TMAH wastewater, the PFBS were detected as the highest and trace amounts of PFOA were detected. Accordingly, at a temperature of 20 ± 2 ℃, the PFBS artificial water at pH 5.5 – 6.5, the two catalysts were used to create a photocatalytic reaction. The decomposition rate of change and catalyst performance for the competing factors of PFC concentration influence, PFOA, and DOC was compared. PFBS decomposed well under both catalysts while when using GO-TiO2 on PFOA using 0.01 g for 3 hours resulted in 100 % decomposition and was confirmed through analysis. Using large amounts of TiO2 created a high turbidity resulting in a decreased decomposition rate. On the other hand, large amounts of GO-TiO2 resulted in low turbidity, reducing the reaction time to 30 minutes. When decomposing PFBS, depending on the competing factor concentrations of PFOA and DOC, it can be determined that the PFBS decomposition reaction time increased due to the consumption of OH radicals by the competing factors. Through this research, beyond the approximately 170 m3/d of perfluorinated compounds that occur daily, considering the influencing factors of various interfering substances in TMAH wastewater, it was determined that GO-TiO2 can be used effectively for photocatalytic decomposition.
