This study was aimed to examine the effectiveness of the self-guided forest therapy program. A pre-test and post-test control group design was employed to evaluate the effectiveness of the self-guided forest therapy program compared with the guided forest therapy program and control group. A total of 57 participated in this study (19 in the self-guided forest therapy program group; 19 in the guided forest therapy program group; 19 in the control group). The profile of mood state (POMS) questionnaire, the modified form of the stress response inventory (SRI-MF), self-esteem scale (RSES), and concise measure of subjective well-being (COMOSWB) were administered to each participant to assess psychological effects. The EEG biomarkers and Heart Rate Variability were measured to determine physiological effects. After each program, the self-reported essays were analyzed using NVivo 12.0 qualitative data analysis software to identify the differences in characteristics between self-guided forest therapy program and guided forest therapy program. And the satisfaction level of the forest therapy program experienced by participants was surveyed. The results of this study are as follows. First, we found that participants in both groups of self-guided forest therapy program and guided forest therapy program had significantly positive increases in their mood, stress response, self-esteem, and subjective well-being levels compared with those of the control group participants. Therefore, the self-guided forest therapy program provides psychological health benefits to users. Secondly, participants in both groups of self-guided forest therapy program and guided forest therapy program had significantly improved MEF among EEG biomarker-related related variables compared with those of the control group. In the case of HRV biomarkers, the self-guided forest therapy program had improved SDNN, and the guided forest therapy program decreased heart rate after the program. However, changes in sympathetic nerve activity and parasympathetic nerve activity were nonsignificant for both programs. On the other hand, the control group showed no change in both EEG biomarkers and HRV biomarkers. Therefore, the self-guided forest therapy program provides some physiological effects. Third, this study revealed healing factors and effects by analyzing self-reporting essays by participants in the self-guided forest therapy program and guided forest therapy program. We found that healing factors contained four categories in common: Auditory element, visual element, tactile element, and olfaction element. For statements on healing effects, we found that the self-guided forest therapy program and guided forest therapy program was divided into five categories in common: Change of mind and body, Change of emotion, Social interaction, Change of cognitive, and Introspection. The program’s characteristics show that a self-guided forest therapy program provides an opportunity for self-reflection to focus and think about one’s inner self. On the other hand, guided forest therapy program provide positive emotional changes and promote social ties through interaction with others. Fourth, the participants in both the self-guided forest therapy program and guided forest therapy program showed high satisfaction with the program’s progress time, experience space, activity intensity, details, and overall program. The most satisfactory program was “Forest meditation” in the case of the self-guided forest therapy program, followed by “Walking in the forest,” “Forest respiration,” “Forest stretching,” and “Forest exercise.” In the case of the guided forest therapy program, “Forest orienteering” was the highest, followed by “Healing meditation,” “Together with the forest,” “Forest exercise,” and “Barefoot walking.” This study confirmed that the self-guided forest therapy program contributes to the participants’ health promotion. The self-guided forest therapy program can be an efficient tool or system in situations such as lack of forest therapists, such as school forests, hospitals, office areas, etc. Also, the self-guided forest therapy program is thought to be used for urban dwellers of a busy life to prevent physical and mental disease and improve their quality of life.
