This study was carried out to investigate the residual characteristics of diazinon and fluquinconazole in upland soils and to identify the absorption patterns of the test pesticides by the young Welsh onion which is one of the rotational crops. Supervised field trials were conducted under greenhouse conditions in Jeonju and Yesan in Republic of Korea. The test pesticides diazinon and fluquinconazole were treated onto the 30 and 60 days of plant-back interval (PBI) plots at level of 4.5 g a.i./30 m2 and 7.5 g a.i./30 m2, respectively, according to their pre-harvest intervals. Just before the young Welsh onions were transplanted into the test plots which were applied the pesticides 30 and 60 days ago, the test plots were plowed and then the 63 day-grown test rotational crop was transplanted. The crop was cultivated for 48 days by the conventional methods. For the investigation of the time-dependent dissipation patterns of the test pesticides in soils, the soil samples were collected 12 times from 0 to 78 days after pesticide treatment from PBI 30 (30 days of plant-back interval) and 15 times from 0 to 108 days after pesticide treatment from PBI 60 (60 days of plant-back interval) treatment plots. The residues of the test pesticides in soils and crop were analyzed with an LC-MS/MS. Limits of quantification of diazinon were 0.003 mg/kg for young Welsh onion and 0.01 mg/kg for soil. Those of fluquinconazole were 0.006 mg/kg for young Welsh onion and 0.01 mg/kg for soil. Recoveries of the test pesticides in the crop and soils ranged from 70.1 to 110.5%. No diazinon was detected in young Welsh onion. Maximum concentrations of fluquinconazole detected from the crop at PBI 30 and PBI 60 treatment plots were 0.23 and 0.25 mg/kg in Jeonju field and 0.15 and 0.14 mg/kg in Yesan field, respectively. The residual amounts of fluquinconazole in the test crop were gradually increased after transplanting and then slowly decreased from 23.0-25.5 days after transplanting. The half-lives of diazinon in soil at Jeonju and Yesan fields were 16.1-22.4 and 17.3-21.0 days, while those of fluquinconazole were 24.8-49.5 and 23.1-46.2 days, respectively. The half-lives of the test chemicals in the soils were not significantly different depending on the soil depth in the plots of PBI 30 and PBI 60 treatment. In addition, the residual amounts of diazinon and fluquinconazole decreased by more than 90% after 69.8 and 164.5 days of treatment, respectively. The maximum translocation rate of fluquinconazole from soil to the crop at two test fields was 10.8%. In order not to exceed 0.01 mg/kg in the rotational crop, concentration of fluquinconazole in soil should be lower than 0.9 mg/kg, considering its maximum translocation rate. The maximum estimated daily intake of fluquinconazole was 2.28% at Jeonju field and 1.28% of its acceptable daily intake at Yesan field, indicating that the residual amount of fluquinconazole in Welsh onion was do not pose an unacceptable health risks.
