Food security is defined as "the condition that all members of the family can use food of sufficient quantity and quality for a healthy life". If food intake is insufficient due to poverty, health problems is increase. Both developed and developing countries are concerned about food security issues, but the amount of research that assesses health using 18-item food security questionnaire newly added in 2012 for korean adults is inadequate. we investigated the relationship between physical and mental health and nutritional status of adults according to food security using National Health and Nutrition Survey of 2013-2015. The population were 3,795(2013), 3,381(2014), and 3,586 adults(2015) aged between 19-64 years. Food security was divided into 4 stages, food insecure Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ were integrated into food insecure group and finally classified into food secure group (FS) and food insecure group (FS). We compared the sociodemographics characteristics, health behaviors, quality of life, physical and mental health, practice of healthy diet, nutrient intake, nutrient intake ratio to Dietary Reference Intake for Koreans(KDRIs), and food group intake according to food secure status. And the main effect of mental health on dietary factors and food secure status. In this samples, 91.5% in 2013, 95.9% in 2014, and 92.5% in 2015 were food secure group. In all years, food insecure group had low income level, education level, high divorce rate, and age and sex did not depend on food security status. The food insecurity group showed significantly adverse subjective health status (OR: 1.49, 1.54, 1.43) in all years. Quality-of-life scores in all years were lower in the food insecure group, serum biochemical indicators in both groups were within normal range, and disease prevalence by food security was not statistically significant. After adjustment for covariates, associations in relation to food insecurity emerged for stress(ORs: 1.86, 1.99, 1.61), depressed symptom experience(ORs: 2.02, 3.54, 1.81) and suicide ideation('13, '15 ORs: 2.76, 2.87) in all years. In all the years, the rate of ‘consuming more than 500g of fruits and vegetables/day' was significantly lower in the food insecure group. In the FIS, nutrient intake were lower in all years, and calcium, potassium, vitamin A, C and riboflavin deficiency rates were significantly higher. In the FIS had lower intake of vegetable·seaweed, milk(2013), fruit, oils· sugars, beverages·alcohol (2014), vegetable·seaweed, fruit group(2015). In particular, there was a significant relationship between food security and mental health. The analysis of the correlation between healthy diet, food security and mental health showed that there is a difference every year. However, when not consuming the amount of fruits and vegetables a day, stress and depressed symptoms. Thus, food security and the consumption of fruits and vegetables can help mental health. The strengths of this study are the results of representing the entire population because they assessed health effects after categorizing food security through 18-items. We also assessed the relationship between food security and health effects by controlling various disturbances. The limitation of this study is that the 24-hour survey of the KNHANES is difficult to represent normal nutritional status. In addition, due to the cross-sectional study, causal relationships can not be clarified. As a result of this study, adults are not completely free of health problems related to food security. However, if we complement the related factors, we can raise the percentage of households securing sufficient food safety to 95% by 2020. Further analysis and intervention studies with nutrient intake level should be considered.
