Among the various forms of Taekwondo dojang education, the class content of child-centered Taekwondo dojang tends to focus more on physical activities, play, and games than Taekwondo itself. As a result, Taekwondo dojang is recognized as a gym or a safe playground to engage in various physical activities such as jump rope and school physical education along with Taekwondo, rather than as an educational space for teaching and learning Taekwondo. The problem of child-centered Taekwondo dojang education has been steadily raised for quite a long time, however, most of the Taekwondo dojang still continues the old practices and forms of education without undergoing major changes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate educational process and educational context of current Taekwondo dojang classes in order to explore the problems and future directions of child-centered Taekwondo dojang education. To achieve this research purpose, the researcher selected K-Taekwondo Dojang, which was perceived as a child-centered Taekwondo dojang because more than 80% of the trainees were composed of elementary school students, as the research site. The researcher selected one Grand Master and two Masters as research participants whom the researcher had a good rapport with and thought to be able to provide rich data about child-centered Taekwondo dojang. A case study was conducted on the educational progress and educational context of Taekwondo dojang. Data was collected through participant observations, in-depth interviews and field material examination. The collected data was analyzed through the constant comparison method. Also, for trustworthiness, the thick description, peer debriefing, member check were used. The main research results according to the research problems were as follows.
1) What is the educational process of Taekwondo dojang?
The educational process of Taekwondo dojang could be divided into planning of Taekwondo dojang class, practice of Taekwondo dojang class, and evaluation of Taekwondo dojang class. First, the planning of Taekwondo dojang class could be categorized into the planning of the Taekwondo Grand Master, the planning of the Taekwondo dojang, and the planning of the Taekwondo Master. The Taekwondo Grand Master developed their own curriculum and planned a class to guide the course of the Taekwondo dojang class. The planning of Taekwondo dojang was developed systematically and recursively based on the Grand Master’s plan. The planning of Taekwondo Master was developed spontaneously based on the characteristics of the trainee. Second, the practice of Taekwondo dojang class could be classified into Taekwondo class based on the subject of education and Taekwondo class based on the planning. Taekwondo dojang class were divided into elementary trainees class, kindergarten trainees class and demonstration team class considering the different physical development stages of the trainees, and the purpose and method of each class were all different. In addition, in the Taekwondo dojang class, which were operated according to the planning, the class preparation and warm-up were conducted at the beginning of the class, and small groups by level were adopted by using the direct instruction model and the peer teaching model in the middle of the class. Finally, at the end of the class, a fun time and warp up were in place for the enjoyment of the trainees. Third, the class evaluation of Taekwondo dojang could be divided into the Taekwondo dojang promotion test and physical fitness measurement evaluation. The Taekwondo dojang promotion test included a pop quiz that motivated Masters and trainees, an evaluation on the contents of Taekwondo dojang class, and a test on the Taekwondo dojang class contents which was evaluated according to the subjective standards of the Master and the individual level and characteristics of the trainees. Physical fitness measurement evaluation was used as a growth index for trainees to check how much the trainee's motor skills and physical strength have developed through Taekwondo training. The evaluation included cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, agility, and a sense of balance. In addition, through the evaluation, the information was collected not only on exercise function and physical strength development but also physical ability information related to Taekwondo movement performance. This data was used as an important index for planning and teaching in class.
2) What is the educational context of Taekwondo dojang?
The educational context of Taekwondo dojang could be divided into classes that considers the characteristics of trainees, classes that demonstrates the Master's expertise, and classes that reflects the needs of parents. First, the class that considered the characteristics of trainees were those that took the trainee's age, number of participation, and progress into consideration. Since the K Taekwondo dojang was composed mainly of trainees from six to ten years old, the contents of the class included jump rope, running, and recreational activities to accommodate trainees' short duration of concentration and lack of exercise function and physical strength. In addition, trainees who participated in class three times a week had no choice but to learn limited content compared to trainees who participated five times a week. Therefore, the Master had to make several small groups to fill this gap. Also, the progress of the trainees participating all varied, so the class had no choice but to accommodate each trainee’s different progress and the Taekwondo promotion test could not be evaluated on a single criterion. Second, classes in which the Master’s expertise was demonstrated could be divided into classes based on the Master's knowledge and classes based on the Master's specialty. The class at Taekwondo dojang were operated in different ways according to the knowledge each Master had. Taekwondo dojang considered this as class diversities, and it was thought natural because each master's educational experience and knowledge were different. However, due to the different knowledge of each Master, the consistency in the use of terms was not made, which caused confusion among trainees. In addition, the Taekwondo dojang class differed based on the Master's specialty. For example, a Master who specialized in Poomsae had a variety of experiences and knowledge about how to teach Poomsae, so the Master was able to provide professional instructions when teaching Poomsae. However, the Master was providing comparably unprofessional education when he was teaching Gyeorugi and demonstration which the Master had relatively little experience and knowledge. Third, the class reflecting the needs of parents could be divided into a request for physical activities and a request for services. Parents were expecting their children to sweat and exercise through participating in various physical activities besides learning about Taekwondo by attending the Taekwondo dojang. Therefore, parents did not care if the class was conducted with contents that are not Taekwondo related. The parents also wanted their children to learn jump rope and school physical education at Taekwondo dojang. In other words, the parents were hoping that the Taekwondo dojang class would provide additional education opportunities along with Taekwondo. Also, Taekwondo dojang had no choice but to reflect the parents' demands for play and care in order to survive the competition with other dojangs. Based on these findings, the researcher made the following suggestions to broaden the understanding of the field of Taekwondo education and to change and improve Taekwondo education in a desirable direction. First, research on the application of the Taekwondo standard curriculum could be conducted. In this study, the educational process and educational context of Taekwondo dojang education were investigated. It is believed that such data can be helpful in understanding in-depth how Taekwondo classes are conducted at Taekwondo dojang. Also, I think it could be helpful to study the plans for applying the Taekwondo standard curriculum to Taekwondo dojang. Second, it is necessary to study Taekwondo dojang class from the perspective of trainees. In this study, Taekwondo dojang classes were viewed only from the perspective of Masters. However, since Taekwondo dojang classes are conducted through the interaction between Masters and trainees, it is necessary to study Taekwondo dojang class from the perspective of trainees. Therefore, when you look at Taekwondo dojang class from the perspective of a Taekwondo Master as well as from a Taekwondo trainee's perspective, you will be able to understand Taekwondo dojang classes further.
