누가복음의 반-로마적 읽기 : 레기온(Λεγιών) 귀신 축출 기사를 중심으로(눅 8:26-39) Anti-Roman Reading the Gospel of Luke : focused on the exorcism narrative of Legion(Λεγιών)(Lk. 8:26-39)원문보기

The present thesis intends to analyze the author’s attitude toward the Roman Empire shown in the Gospel of Luke, and his message to his readers in a socio-political perspective. Scholars, who study the relationship between Luke-Acts and the Roman Empire, show diversified views on the subject by taking either pro- or anti-Roman positions. In particular, H. Conzelmann's apologetic stance, which explains that Luke intended to reconcile the relationship between the Lukan community and the Roman Empire, played a major role in Luke’s theology, making a pro-Roman reading customary. As a result, the volume of studies that have anti-Roman views has been relatively reduced. This study, however, is trying to clarify that the trend does not reflect the author’s intended view by reading Luke’s narrative on “The exorcist narrative of Legion”(Lk. 8.26-39), which reveals that the Jesus movement is against the violent Roman empire. This study also tries to emphasize a particular anti-Roman view, that is not previously discussed, by interpreting different scenes with a theological and a historical approach, and on the way, it also describes the negative aspects of the Roman rule. Luke undoubtedly pays special attention to the 10th Legion (Fretensis , a wild boar was the symbol of their shield and legion flag) stationed in the country of Gerasenes, through which the Roman Emperor becomes a dictator. Gerasenes was under Rome’s repression, and like a man haunted by Legion, it was looted everything they owned to Rome. The invasion of Legion that happened in the city is a metaphor for political aggression. Legion that possesses the man symbolizes the image of the Roman army and its power over the world. In the sense that the identity of the demons is revealed in the name of Legion, the possession of Gerasene man parallels with the Roman Empire’s military domination over its colonies. Then the Gerasene man comes into the picture. He left his home and is living in a graveyard. But at last, he meets Lukan Jesus. Jesus becomes the Savior who frees the Gerasene man from its oppression(military) by taking control of the man and exterminating the conquered Legion(Roman Army) in the lake. Through this, Luke reveals the political implication that the savior of mankind is Jesus, not the emperor. Just as God destroyed Pharaoh's army in the sea, Jesus removed the influence of the Roman army which ruled the Decapolis area by getting rid of Legion in the lake. Jesus introduces a new empire, the kingdom of God. The anti-Roman interpretation of the Gospel of Luke is beneficial in the sense that it explores how Jesus and his disciples formed and expressed the gospel of the kingdom of God against the imperial oppression of Rome, and thereby allows us to better understand the gospel they proclaimed and realize in detail the teachings of the Gospel of Luke. This thesis attempts to encourage countries that are oppressed by undying imperialism as well as modern Christians around the world who struggle to keep their faith in a difficult situation.
