The purpose of this study is to review the constructivism educational drama improving the mentally retarded adolescents’ sociability and determine the effective approach to it. To the mentally retarded adolescents, the sociability is the essential condition for them to survive in the society as its members. For they are poor at grasping the causal relationship of a situation, while their experience is narrow, not considering or understanding others from others’ perspectives only to cause others to misunderstand them frequently. Nevertheless, as most of their training programs for the development of sociability are about their basic living habits, and therefore, they seem to fall short of solving their psychological problems. Moreover, as it is not easy for them to learn about and develop the social relations in their real-life environment, they may well develop their sociability if they should experience it through the educational dramas. Above all, they could improve their sociability in diverse ways in dramatic situations based on the fictitious nature of dramas. In particular, the constructivism educational dramas would be most optimal for the improvement of their sociability because such dramas should serve to pursue a union rather than segregation, not dividing the students into superior and inferior ones, and emphasizing the individuals’ experiences. Constructivism emphasizes that the cognitive subjects should be active towards the external objects and thereby, should cognize them according to their own experiences, and therefore, that the interpretation of the experience should be the ground for the cognition. Hence, it would be possible to interpret the experiences differently depending on individuals’ subject cognition. According to epistemological constructivism, the cognitive subject constructs his or her knowledge through controlling or being assimilated with the external objects. On the other hand, according to the social constructivism, the cognitive development would be made through the social interactions. Hence, according to the view of the constructivism that learners would construct the meaning, teacher’s role would well be changed into an assistant’s helping learners develop through an appropriate intervention. The educational drama using such constructivism plays the role of helping the learners, and in this course, the state of equilibrium may well be seen as a process of learning a new role. According to the social constructivism, the drama group members internalize the roles they have acquired through the social interactions with other group members, while sympathizing with others to make a dramatic development with the teacher properly engaged in this course. All in all, through such constructivism educational drama, the mentally retarded adolescents could enhance their self-cognition, self-expression and self-esteem due to the improvement of their sociability, which could well be confirmed through the cases. The learner ‘H’ played the role of ‘the Match Girl’ that she had refused; She would take the role through adhesion and separation only to accept ‘the obstructor’ feared and create ‘an affirmative one’, and thereby, enhance her self-cognition. After all, she could establish the social relationship through a candid self-expression, while her self-esteem was enhanced much as well as her sociability. The learner ‘S’ could well express himself in his favorite play, and such experience would be linked to the mutual communication with his peer group. From the view of constructivism, such experience would promote the teacher’s roles of helping him develop through the dramatic growth. After all, teachers’ proper stimulation and intervention may well be equated with the mutual relationship in the sense of the social constructivism. The learner ‘K’ would accept others through an emotional emulation of them. Owing to his experience of the constructivism educational drama, he could self-cognize and self-express himself, which would lead to a higher self-esteem. While he took part of others’ roles, he would interact with them socially, and he would create his new role, internalizing it. In this regard, he may well be a model case regarding the effectiveness of the cognitive constructivism educational drama for the intellectually retarded adolescents. This study may well be significant in that it has confirmed the effects of constructivism educational drama on the development of the mentally retarded adolescents’ sociability through case studies.
