Domestic prevalence of ulcerative colitis, a representative disease of IBD, has increased for the last 10 years. Natural-based nonsteroidal treatments are relatively safe, but they have also been less effective. Therefore, a study was conducted through the processing natural products to enhance the anti-inflammatory effect, and studied if they showed improvement in terms of suppressing acute inflammation when mixing various natural products that are already known to have anti-inflammatory effect. Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) went through puffing process to increase its bioavailability. And 4 oriental herbs, goji berry (fruit of Lycium chinense), liquorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), lycium root bark (Lycii radices cortex), dong quai (Angelica gigas), were mixed with puffed turmeric at various ratio of 7:3, 5:5, 3:7. As a result, a mixture at a ratio of 7:3 had the most suppressive effect on inflammation-related markers in RAW 264.7 cells. Following the decision of mixing ratio, acute colitis mice model was used for assessment on anti-inflammatory effect of mixtures. Consequently, puffed turmeric with oriental herbs mixture relieved symptoms of acute colitis mice more than puffed turmeric only. The results could provide a basic formula for the development of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
