ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to develop and validate the Cultural Identity Scale for multiculturals residing in South Korea. In this study, cultural identity was defined as accepting and internalizing certain culture and cultural group. The study developed and validated the Cultural Identity Scale. The scale development procedure was as follows: first, the theoretical framework was derived to have the four factors ‘lifestyle’, ‘cognitive style’, ‘emotional style’ and ‘behavior style’ by reviewing previous studies about cultural identity. Second, through in-depth interviews, literature reviews, and data searches, initial items were collected and categorized. Third, facial validity and content validity processes were performed. According to the opinions of experts, the content of the items was revised and 67 items were finally selected. The scale validation procedure was as follows: first, 616 copies of data were collected through an online questionnaire. The data was divided into a calibration sample and a validation sample. Second, an 8-factor structure with 51 items was derived by conducting basic item analysis and Exploratory Factor Analysis for the calibration sample. Third, to verify the cross-validity, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was performed on the validation sample, and a modified model consisting of 8 factors with 40 items was extracted. All of the fitness indices of the modified model were judged to be good. Fourth, as a result of analyzing Cronbach’s alpha of the Cultural Identity Scale, the reliability of the whole scale and each factor was found to be at an appropriate level. Fifth, to verify the concurrent validity, the correlation coefficient between the Cultural Identity Scale developed in this study and the existing verified scales, such as the Vancouver Index of Acculturation and the Ethnic Identity Scale, were examined. The correlation coefficient showed significant positive correlation at a ‘very strong’ or ‘strong’ level, thus the concurrent validity was verified. To verify the convergent validity, the correlation coefficients between the Cultural Identity Scale and the Community Adaptation and the Civic Consciousness were examined. The correlation coefficient showed significant positive correlation at strong level, thus the convergent validity was verified. To verify the divergent validity, the correlation coefficients between the Cultural Identity Scale and the Social Adaptation Problems were examined. The correlation coefficient showed moderately significant negative correlation, thus the divergent validity was verified. Through this process, it was verified that the Cultural Identity Scale developed in this study is a valid measurement tool that can evaluate the cultural identity of multiculturals. The Cultural Identity Scale developed in this study was composed of 4 domains, 8 factors, and a total of 40 questions. It evaluates the overall cultural identity of respondents with a 5-point Likert scale. The total score range of the Cultural Identity Scale ranges from 40 points to 200 points, and it can be interpreted that a higher score corresponds with a higher cultural identity. This study is significant in that the Cultural Identity Scale can appropriately measure the cultural identity of multiculturals using 8 factors; it can discover strengths and weaknesses of multiculturals that appear in the process of understanding and utilizing mainstream culture, and can prepare personalized countermeasures; it can provide abundant clues necessary to develop cultural education content; it can trigger the study of the relationship between the adaptation of multiculturals and the variables that affect their lives, and the comparative study of cultural identities of various groups; in addition, it can be utilized as the basis for making policies for multiculturals.
