The purpose of this study was to explore preschoolers' narratives observed in narrative thinking picture book reading activities and to interpret the meanings of their narratives in order to obtain a detailed and deep understanding of individual preschoolers. Through this investigation into young children's narratives, this study sought to help teachers to gain a deep understanding of preschoolers based on their narratives so that they can play the role of a competent helper and interactor who can understand and support young children's thoughts, ideas, and feelings. Study questions were as follows: Research question: What are the meanings of children's narratives observed in narrative thinking picture book reading activities? The participants of this study were 20 preschoolers participating in the after-school program at the age of five who attended Y Kindergarten in O City, Gyeonggi Province. A pilot study was conducted from February 18 to 25, 2021 in order to examine the appropriateness of narrative thinking picture book and activities for children. Then, the study was followed by selecting 8 picture books and carrying out narrative thinking picture book reading activities from March 15 to May 17. The activities were conducted 3 to 4 times a week, a total of 25 activities were recorded and transcribed. In addition, the reflective journals of the researcher, field notes, and children's works were also used as analysis data. To ensure the validity of data analysis and interpretation, the contents of analysis results were reviewed together with 3 co-teachers of the morning classes of the kindergarten by the methods of member checking and peer debriefing. The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, while preschoolers were engaging in narrative thinking picture book reading activities, they began to tell narratives while understanding 'me' and increasing self-awareness through other people such as their friends and family members. More specifically, data analysis and interpretation revealed that young children's narratives contain meanings such as 'the self formed with peers', 'unique and special me refusing to compare myself with others', and 'my desire and my wish connected to others.' Second, while they were engaging in narrative thinking picture book reading activities, preschoolers were found to be telling imaginary stories that they created by breaking down the boundary between reality and fantasy and stepping back and forth across the boundary. In other words, preschoolers' narratives were found to have meanings such as 'imagination through reasoning grounded in reality' and 'pleasure of imagination through fantasy.' Third, while they were engaging in narrative thinking picture book reading activities, preschoolers were also talking about significant others around them related to their life. More specifically, some meanings of preschoolers' narratives were derived as 'the need to get the teacher's attention', 'ambivalent feelings about the family', and 'friends they quarrel with and those they want to play with' Fourth, it was found that while children were involved in narrative thinking picture book reading activities, they were constructing meanings about the world through their narratives. In this connection, the meanings of preschoolers' narratives derived through analysis were 'situations and words not understood until they began to tell stories', and 'reading my own mind and others' minds.' The results of this study showed that young children also live their life forming diverse relationships with significant others around them, and continue to grow and develop, changing their perspectives and cognitive structures while communicating with other people and feeling empathy towards them. In addition, it was shown that at the boundary between reality and fantasy, preschoolers sometimes use logical reasoning grounded in reality and at other times take pleasure in using imagination to create an unlimited world of fantasy. It was also found that they construct new meanings of their or their peers' experiences through their own interpretations. This study attempted to explore young children's narratives shown in narrative thinking picture book reading activities and to interpret the meanings of their narratives in order to gain a deep understanding of individual preschoolers in a meticulous manner. The results of this study showed that teachers should have the ability to understand and interpret the meanings of young children's narratives and interact with individual children. These findings suggest that teachers need to in-depth observe and record individual preschoolers' narratives to understand the meanings of their narratives and primarily strive to improve their capacity to interpret the meanings of preschoolers' narratives.
