The aim of the study was to document the developmental processes of 5 years old children using worldless picture book in the play context. An action research methodology employed involved the virtuous cycle of problem identification, implementing revised method, and re-evaluation. Changes in the teacher and children were documented at each cycle. Three research questions guided to address the study aim.
1. What are the action research processes involved in cognitive and social development of 5 years old children using wordless picture book in the play context? 2. Which changes in 5 years old children are observed during the action research processes that employed wordless picture book in the play context? 3. Which changes in the teacher are observed during the action research processes that employed wordless picture book in the play context?
An action research was carried out in W kindergarten located in Gyungki-do between March 8, 2021 and May 21, 2021. Participants were 16 5-year old children. Sessions were video-audio recorded. Session progress was documented in scene memo, reflective journal, and children’s activity outcomes. The three research inquiries were addressed through three phases of action research that used picture books without words in the play context with 5 years old children. At the first phase, children displayed lack of interest in wordless picture book and considered reading picture books without words and playing as separate activities. To solve the problems, restructuring language area, reading picture books without words in large or small groups, providing autonomy for selecting wordless picture book, supporting play grounded on picture books without words, and generating special section for creating wordless picture book. These problem solving strategies were implemented in the virtuous cycle and outcomes of changes in the teacher and children in each trial were evaluated. At the second phase, children began actively participating in reading wordless picture book and enjoyed creating wordless picture book. By the end of three sessions, children displayed increased interest in words, and remarkable improvement in the entire core competency areas of development, including story building, imagination, creativity, problem solving skills, and prosocial behaviors.
Through the current research, the teacher changed her perception of wordless picture book, gained practical knowledge about wordless picture book, and cultivated further competency as an educator and researcher by integrating picture books without words with play and creating educated, supportive environment to promote children’s development as a whole person. This study documented the key processes involving successful pedagogy that yielded outstanding improvement in children’s cognitive and social development competency, which are tailored for the critical developmental phase. This study also illustrated the exceptional benefit of integration of wordless picture book with play for promoting children’s motivation toward reading and prosocial behaviors in particular, which provided the fundamental basis for growth as a whole person.
