Effect of Repeated Picture Book Reading Activity on Preschoolers’ Reading Motivation and Reading Interests원문보기

Picture book reading activity is known to stimulate imagination, promote thinking skills, and provide emotional nourishment. In particular, positive attitudes towards reading experienced in early childhood would affect the quality of reading across the lifespan. In addition, repeated reading of picture books would have positive impact on expanding understanding of stories and arousing interest in books. In this study, hence, it would be examined how repeated picture book reading activity would affect reading motivation and reading interests. Also, it is expected that the study results would help picture book reading activity be utilized as a teaching and learning method in the early childhood education field, and provided as basic data for the activity to be generalized and popularized. For this, research questions have been established as follows. Research Question 1. What impact of repeated picture book reading activity would be made on preschoolers’ reading motivation? Research Question 2. What impact of repeated picture book reading activity would be made on preschoolers’ reading interests? Forty-four study subjects have been selected among children belonging to room for 4-5 years in S daycare or G daycare located in P city, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province. Twenty- two including eleven of 4-year and eleven of 5-year old children have been assigned to each of experimental and control groups. In order to assess reading motivation of children from each group, Motivations for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) developed by Wigfield and Guthrie (1997) and translated by Kwon (2002) has been used. Also, Primary Pupil Reading Attitude Inventory (PPRAI) developed by Askor and Fischbach (1973) and translated by Lim (1994) has been used for measurement of reading interests. Twenty-four sessions of experiments have been performed 3 times weekly for 8 consecutive weeks between October 7th and November 30th, 2019. Children in the experimental group were provided repeated picture book reading activity, and a different picture book was selected each week. Based on the results of preparatory experiments, listen-and-read-aloud and take-turn-reading-by-group of Morrow’s (2011) reading strategies have been implemented. Once examination of cover page, introduction of book title and the author, and sharing prediction of the story were complete, teacher started reading the book to children out loud. Then, listen-and-read-aloud activity has been performed followed by take-turn-reading-by-group. For listen-and-read-aloud, teacher read a page in which children were interested and let them repeat it out loud. For take-turn-reading-by-group activity, on the other hand, children were divided into small groups and each group read a part of a book by turns. When the activities were finished, the books have been placed in reading area for children to easily access. Data collected have been analyzed using SPSS WIN 23.0 Windows, and analysis details are as follows. First, Independent 2 sample t-test has been executed to calculate homogeneity of reading motivation and reading interests of each group in the preparatory experiments. Second, in order to determine whether repeated picture book reading activity would affect preschoolers’ reading motivation and reading interests, pre-post test mean values and standard deviations (SD) as well as pretest results have been used as covariates, and ANCOVA has been carried out. The study results are shown as follows. First, repeated picture book reading has been found to have positive impact on preschoolers’ reading motivation. Analysis results indicate that all the sub-variables except avoidance of reading motivation including self-efficacy (efficacy, challenging), covert purpose (curiosity, commitment, importance, avoidance), overt purpose (approval, competition), and social aspect (interaction, adaptation) have significantly changed after repeated picture book reading activity was performed. This suggests that repeated picture book reading activity would positively motivate preschoolers to read books. Second, effect analysis of repeated picture book reading activity on preschoolers’ reading interests resulted in higher levels of reading interests of preschoolers in the experimental group. This suggests that repeated picture book reading activity would positively influence preschoolers’ level of reading interests. In this study, it has been investigated whether the effect of repeated picture book reading activity would affect preschoolers’ reading motivation and reading interests. Although picture book is one of the primary learning tools that teachers frequently use in early childhood education field, there have not been various studies of its effect on preschoolers’ reading motivation. This study, in this respect, has implications. Given that repeated picture book reading activity has been verified to have positive impact on preschoolers’ reading motivation and reading interests, furthermore, reliability of this activity can be accordingly proven. Thus, it is anticipated that repeated picture book reading activity would practically be applied and utilized in early childhood education field in the future.
