A Study on Literacy Guidance Plan Using Picture Books for Children Who Do Not Comprehend Korean in small class원문보기

This study offers a method and a strategy for teaching Korean literacy to all first grade elementary school students who are illiterate with no experience in learning Korean literacy. Since digital innovations are reshaping our society, electronic communication, such as social media, instant messaging and email, has become a very popular means for people to communicate, engaged and actively participating non-face to face in this process. In digital society, reading, writing, and expressing oneself are the essential abilities that students must have in the future. In addition, reading and writing are the key skills in student achievement and self-formation since accumulated learning deficits and experience of learning failures due to lack of Korean literacy can cause a negative impact on their self-esteem and self-awareness. However, many students in small schools in rural areas-farming, forestry, and fishing communities- enter schools with little experience in learning Korean literacy on account of lack of technology, educational expectations and parental involvement. Therefore, educational dependency on public schools is very high in these areas. Public schools’ responsibility for teaching Korean literacy in this environment is overwhelming. as a result, It is necessary to provide a method and a strategy for teaching Korean Literacy that can be achieved in the regular curriculum contexts in those small rural schools. In Chapter II, the theoretical foundation of the Korean literacy teaching method using picture books are outlined in a discussion of why and how we might employ picture books in the teaching of Korean. While identifying the contents of Korean literacy instruction to teach, the use of picture books in the development of Korean literacy is also introduced. The concepts and definitions of the word, ‘literacy’ varied from skill-based notion offunctional literacy to broad sense of language are summarized. Then, two distinguished theories in language development, phonological and holistic approaches, are examined thoroughly. Based on these, the contents of Korean literacy instructions and learning elements for this study are explored and established by reviewing and enhancing the current first-year Korean language curriculum. Next, various concepts and characteristics of picture books used in Korean literacy learning materials are discussed. The educational value and importance of the use of picture books are also indicated as well. The principles of using picture books, the elements of instructional contents, and applying methods through a balanced approach in language development are provided; then, the benefits and effectiveness of the use of picture books in the development of Korean literacy learning are predicted. In Chapter III, the methodological features and experimental settings for this study are explained, which include the subject of study, diagnosis of levels via pre-test, study periods, procedures, evaluation tools, data collection and data analysis. This study was conducted with the first grade students, 3 males and 1 female, at Y Elementary School in Yongsan-myeon, Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do for 10 weeks from early March to early May in the 2021 school year. Two tests were given to measure achievement at the end of the study. The tests were designed to measure the degree of improvement by utilizing the Wellymi Korean Diagnosis Test, Reading Ability Attitude Test, and interviews with learners and their parents. In Chapter IV, the process of designing and teaching the contents of Korean Literacy using picture books is described in detail. Four suitable picture books were selected for an each unit of standard school curriculum in Korean language course. The main topic of the story, composition, contents, and pictures were considered in this selection of the books. By integrating teaching with picture books in the Korean language class, three major steps are followed: 1. Introduction-2. Preparation-3. Application for each book, 3 sessions per one book and total 12 sessions. This provides balanced and systematically performed curriculum. After 12 sessions of teaching, a series of tests -Wellymi Korean Diagnosis Test, Reading Ability Attitude Test, and interviews- were given in order to measure Korean literacy improvement. The pedagogical implications of this study, the use of picture books in the development of Korean literacy for illiterate students in the early years of schooling, are as follows. First, this study gives the invaluable opportunity that the use of picture books in the development of Korean literacy can be best positioned as an important part of regular curriculum in the Korean language course. Second, the use of picture books in the development of Korean literacy improves Korean comprehension and has a positive impact on reading attitude. Third, a pre-diagnosis test precedes all the measures separately from the school curriculum system in order to deliver personalized learning in Korean literacy education. In summary, here are the significance of this study, which aims to develop a method of teaching Korean literacy using picture books to illiterate students in rural schools and to verify benefits and effectiveness of this approach. First, the study provides a practical teaching tool that can be incorporated easily into Korean lessons. The practical and systematic teaching model that can be applied in the class is presented by specifically showing the process of Korean learning using picture books. so, the powerful visual illustrations to move beyond the process of decoding a language into meaningful pictures allow students to engage immediately with the visual text. Second, the study shows a significant fact that this new approach of teaching was delivered within 2021 regular Korean language curriculum combining experiences with picture books in the grade 1 classroom to support Korean literacy development. In addition, unlike other studies on literacy teaching methods that are targeted at the specific learners taking after-school program or extra curriculum activities, this method can be delivered in regular school hours, which relieves the burden on both teachers and learners. Third, the study offers an opportunity of securing trust in public education in rural areas-farming, forestry, and fishing communities- where educational dependency on public schools is extremely high without any special private educations. besides, Picture books provide the opportunity for offering students access to an experience of the pleasure of study.
