This study investigates cases of transition learning through picture book creation, focusing on adults, who participated in a special program on picture books in the public library. Specific research questions are the following. First, what kind of experience is participating in creating picture books for adults? Second, how is the transition learning in adults happening through this experience of picture book creation? These were the problems identified, and they were analyzed through the cases of research participants who experienced creating picture books and explored the theoretical basis of transformational learning. The research used the case study method to solve the problem. It was a program stretching from May to November of 2019 at the S public library of area I, where 15 locals participated in making picture books, picture book concerts, and exhibitions together. 4 program participants who, after participating in the program, went on to picture book publishing were chosen to be research participants. The researcher participated and observed the picture book creation as an instructor and used things such as interview, book concert, and exhibition results, as well as related newspaper articles and websites as supplementary material. This was the research participant’s experience in picture book creation. First, picture book creation started as individually making a picture book based on individual desire, but as the learning process was so difficult, the participants started depending on each other emotionally and leading each other through the learning process. A change in perspective and behavior also happens through the formation of relationships and various experiences that occur in learning situations, which implies an emotional, rational, and practical transformation, basically a total transformation. Second, in the picture book creation experience, the participants put great meaning in their book selling and starting economic activity, even a small amount, as the job of picture book writers and picture book publishing appeared. This changed into a consumer buying their picture book being a recognition of their art. It became an opportunity to feel the sense of responsibility as a picture book writer, no, an artist. This is consistent with results of previous study results where adult learners can go from their pre-existing fix thoughts or perspectives to a more inclusive, open, reflective, and sensible change through dramatic events or meaningful experiences. Transitional learning through picture book creation was expressed through ‘Picture Book Dongsang Imong’, ‘Me on White Drawing Paper’, ’Painting, You and I, Communicate Through Painting‘, and ‘A New Horizon Revealed through Picture Books’. In ‘Picture Book Dongsang Imong’, it was divided into ‘between ideal and reality’ and ‘emotional crises’ to mean the confusion while experiencing mental and physical burden or stress from personal and environmental reasons. In ‘Me on White Paper’, they focus on the program by ‘objective recognition’ and ‘resetting of goals’ through confronting their own limitations and chaotic environment through conversations with colleagues and instructors. In ‘You and Me, Communication Through Painting’, they learn, through various information and programs, the ‘power of interest and observation’ by finding stories starting from their surroundings, and they gain confidence from learning various writing and drawing ‘expressive skills’. They break away from the passive attitude when making their story into a book and gain an active attitude in participating in the program, wanting to awaken their own potential and include a variety of thoughts into their book. In ‘A New Horizon Revealed through Picture Books’, one can see the positive impact they have on their children as parents through gaining a ‘more receptive attitude’ through conversations with peers and readers, in addition, to ‘gaining a new role’ by accomplishing the end result of a picture book by going through the difficult process of publishing a picture book. They also became the envy of other parents and somewhat of a celebrity that they want to learn with, a role model they wanted to emulate. As a result of this change in self-awareness and changing perception of the receptive surroundings, research participants took practical action with’ new trails and challenges’, now as planner of a town community and a representative of a local club for other learners, in contrast before where they were the learners. This study investigated the special program on picture books at the public library as a case study. The results of the study may suggest the need to improve and support picture book creation programs so that public libraries can grow into a developed culture and arts center for local communities.
