This action research examines the change in 4-year-old children and their teacher after wordplay using alphabet books intended to enhance children’s interest in reading. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. How is action research on children’s word play connected to alphabet books carried out?
2. What changes did the children display through the action research process of the children’s word play connected to alphabet books?
3. What changes did the teacher display through the action research process of the children’s word play connected to alphabet books?
The action research was conducted from August 2020 to February 2021 on twenty-one 4-year-old children in kindergarten A located in Seoul. It was conducted three times over the period. The data gathered include video and audio recordings of the action research, as well as teacher’s reflective journals and outcomes from children’s play. The results of this action research are as follows.
Firstly, the researcher found that children in Yeol-mae class had the fear of reading alphabets despite having an interest in alphabets, which lowered their enthusiasm for reading. In order to support their interest in the alphabet and to resolve their fear, the teacher provided several methods involving word play such as presenting alphabet books with riddles, introducing word play, turning word play into games for small groups, offering word play games involving writing. The children’s reactions and changes to these methods were observed and reflected throughout the course of research.
Secondly, the researcher observed that children’s word play connected to alphabet books produced positive developments in many of the participants. The children who previously showed fear of reading came to enjoy picture alphabet books in numerous ways. Some became active participants in word play and even expanded the game, and some attempted to read alphabets.
Thirdly, through the action research of the children’s word play connected with alphabet books, the teacher also showed positive developments by improving speciality of teaching children how to read by enhancing their interest and also learning to induce children’s voluntary word play.
