Automotive exhaust is one of the major sources of air pollutants and greenhouse gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM), etc. Hence, extensive studies have been carried out in recent years to control the emissions from automotive engine systems. Particulate matter (PM) from diesel and gasoline engine is a combination of soot and other chemical materials. The use of particulate filters is a promising approach to reduce PM from exhaust, and a regeneration process is performed to sustain the performance of trap. During the regeneration process, the accumulated soot particles must be oxidized to CO2 at the high temperature conditions, and the soot must reach at least 600-650 °C to sustain combustion performance. Therefore, a catalytic system has been reported in a number of ways to enhance the combustion of the stacked soot and to lower the oxidation temperature. In these systems, noble metal is the most widely applied in the oxidation catalysts due to its high activity and durability. However, many studies have been reported to substitute noble metals by other active metals due to the high cost of noble metals, and the ceria-based catalysts are one of the most promising candidates. CeO2-based catalysts have been studied to improve the activity, selectivity and thermal stability in catalytic reactions. The oxygen storage capacity (OSC) and reducibility of CeO2 catalysts are crucial in the catalytic soot oxidation since the continuous redox process occurs in the oxidation reaction. The first part of this thesis was aimed at the study on the effect of Ag amount on the macroporous CeO2 in the terms of catalytic activities and properties for soot oxidation. The macroporous CeO2 catalyst (MCeO2) presented better catalytic activity than mesoporous CeO2 attributed to the efficient contact between catalyst and soot. Thereafter, the Ag, which promotes the O2 dissociation and bulk oxygen utilization, was incorporated into MCeO2 with various Ag amounts (AgxMCe). The ability to generate active oxygen species (Oxn-) was different according to Ag loadings. The Raman spectroscopy revealed that Ag5MCe presented the largest amount of superoxide (O2- ), which is the highly active oxygen species (Oxn-) than other oxygen species. Moreover, the amount of surface oxygen vacancies ([VO]) of MCeO2 and AgxMCe catalysts were observed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which determined the ability of the catalysts to generate Oxn-. As a result, the amounts of Ag over CeO2 greatly influenced the [VO] value, subsequently resulting in the different Oxn- proportions of the catalysts. In particular, the proper [VO] value of Ag5MCe led to the enhanced O2- generation and the best catalytic activity for soot oxidation. As a result, the macroporous structure of CeO2 catalysts induced the efficient soot-catalyst contact. In addition, the optimal amount of Ag impregnation on CeO2-based catalysts was important for suitable [VO] and O2- generation. Following concern of this thesis was to examine the promoting effect of Cu on CeO2 and Ag/CeO2 catalysts, and Cu was first impregnated over Ag/CeO2 catalyst for soot oxidation (Ag5CuxCe). The Cu species were well-dispersed and interacted with adjacent Ag particles and CeO2. In particular, the interrelation between Ag-CeO2 interaction and Cu-CeO2 interaction of Ag5CuxCe catalysts were observed through Raman spectroscopy and H2-temperature programmed reduction experiments, which improved the highly reactive O2- generation and redox properties. Herein, the Cu loading determined the degrees of the Ag-CeO2 interaction (Ag+ + Ce3+ → Ag0 + Ce4+) and CuO-CeO2 interaction (Cu2+ + Ce3+ ↔ Cu+ + Ce4+), and affected the amount of Oxn- and redox properties of the catalysts. The synergistic effects of Cu on Ag5Ce improved the redox properties at low temperature. Especially, the proper [VO] value of Ag5Cu0.4Ce enhanced the O2- generation and catalytic activity for soot oxidation. Consequently, the Cu impregnation on Ag5Ce resulted in the remarkable promoting effect of Cu. The optimal Cu loading on Ag/CeO2 was determined which led to the positive interrelations between Ag-CeO2 and CuO-CeO2 interactions, while excessive Cu loading hampered the degrees of improvement in catalytic activities and properties. Finally, the properties of active noble metals (Ag, Au, Pd, Pt, and Rh) on CeO2-based catalysts (MCe) were evaluated through experimental methods and theoretical methods. Each noble metal was well-dispersed over CeO2, except for severely sintered Au catalyst. The redox properties of CeO2 surface oxygen of MCe catalysts were greatly enhanced attributed to the interacting with adjacent noble metals. The catalytic activities of MCe catalysts for soot oxidation followed the order of Rh/CeO2, Ag/CeO2, Pt/CeO2, Au/CeO2, Pd/CeO2, and CeO2, and the vacancy formation energy of the catalysts was gradually reduced in the following order of CeO2, Pd/CeO2, Pt/CeO2, Au/CeO2 = Ag/CeO2, and Rh/CeO2. As a result, Rh/CeO2 and Ag/CeO2 revealed the improved catalytic activities and properties, attributed to the enhanced ability to generate oxygen vacancy formation and oxygen adsorption. Consequently, the experimental methods and DFT calculation results revealed the roles of noble metals on CeO2-based catalysts.
