As the Covid-19 pandemic continues, people are refraining from outdoor activities in abidance with social distancing guidelines, working from home or other remote locations. Due to such lifestyle shifts, modalities of consumption are also leaning toward the “untact,” or in other words non-face-to-face interactions, which in turn resulted in growing popularity of live commerce. Live commerce refers to online channels that introduce and sell products through real-time video streaming platforms. The key characteristic of live commerce is ‘mutual communication,’ whereby sellers communicate with consumers through chat features as they introduce the products. The viewers can communicate with the show hosts real-time using the chat function during the live streaming process. Whereas prior studies on the subject focused on TV home shopping show hosts, this study explores the impact of linguistic and non-linguistic communication on the viewers’ purchase activity in the domain of live commerce. Also, the study investigates the interrelationship between live commerce show hosts’ linguistic and non-linguistic communication and purchase activity based on the variables on gender and marriage status. The study was carried out through online surveys using the convenience sampling method, with 205 subjects who have prior experience in purchasing products through live commerce. The findings show that voice and exterior presentation (looks), respectively for linguistic and non-linguistic communication, had significant impact on purchase activity. In the case of men, voice and exterior presentation, among select linguistic communication factors respectively in linguistic and non-linguistic communication, had significant impact on purchase activity. In the case of women, voice was found to have significant impact among linguistic factors, whereas with non-linguistic communication, gesture and exterior presentation were found to be significant. With regard to marital status, the show host’s voice had significant impact on both married and unmarried subjects among all linguistic communication factors, and exterior presentation among non-linguistic communication factors was also proven to be significant to both married and unmarried subjects. The impact of exterior presentation was more significant than voice for married subjects, whereas the converse proved to be the case for unmarried subjects. This study illuminates the interrelation between the show host’s linguistic and non-linguistic communication and consumer purchase activity in live commerce, with particular focus on the emergent mobile shopping channel environment. As such, the study will be of useful reference in establishing the show host’s role in marketing strategies or future studies on consumer activity. Moreover, the study may serve as informative resource for live show host training and promoting further growth in the live commerce market by exploring the role, qualifications, and aspirational qualities of show hosts in the industry.
